Iran's president Ebrahim Raisi on board 'crashed' helicopter - huge rescue operation on way
Rescuers in Iran have launched an urgent rescue mission after an incident involving a helicopter which President Ebrahim Raisi was aboard, although further details are yet to be clarified.
Rescuers in Iran are trying to reach a helicopter involved in "an incident" while traveling with an entourage including President Ebrahim Raisi, state television reported Sunday.
Iranian state television says helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi had a 'hard landing'. There was no immediate elaboration on what happened to the helicopter, nor who was on board. Semiofficial news agencies offered varying explanations for what was happening.
Raisi had been in Azerbaijan early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third one that the two nations built on the Aras River.

Iranian state media has reported the incident occurred near Jolfa, a border city around 375 miles north west of capital, Tehran.
Iran flies a variety of helicopters in the country, but international sanctions make it difficult to obtain parts for them. Its military air fleet also largely dates back to before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Raisi, 63, is a hard-liner who formerly led the country's judiciary. He is viewed as a protege of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some analysts have suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after his death or resignation from the role.
He has been in power since 2021 when he won the country's last presidential election, which saw the lowest voter turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. He currently is subject to US sanctions over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.
Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. Lat month, Raisi threatened his hands were "on the trigger" if Israel were to target any of its nuclear sites amidst rising tensions.
Iran launched a massive drone-and-missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also has supplied arms to Russia for the Ukraine war and continued arming proxy groups in the Mideast, like Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

ingapore is seeing a new Covid-19 wave as the authorities recorded more than 25,900 cases from May 5 to 11 even as Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Saturday advised the wearing of masks again.
“We are at the beginning part of the wave where it is steadily rising,” said Ong. “So, I would say the wave should peak in the next two to four weeks, which means between mid- and end of June,” Minister Ong Ye was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said the estimated number of COVID-19 cases in the week of May 5 to 11 rose to 25,900 cases, compared with 13,700 cases in the previous week. The average daily Covid-19 hospitalisations rose to about 250 from 181 the week before. The average daily intensive care unit (ICU) cases remained low at three cases, compared with two cases in the previous week.

The MOH said that to protect hospital bed capacity, public hospitals have been asked to reduce their non-urgent elective surgery cases and move suitable patients to transitional care facilities or back home through Mobile Inpatient Care@Home, an alternative inpatient care delivery model that offers clinically suitable patients the option of being hospitalised in their own homes instead of a hospital ward.
Ong urged those who are at greatest risk of severe disease, including individuals aged 60 years and above, medically vulnerable individuals and residents of aged care facilities, to receive an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine if they have not done so in the last 12 months.
Ong said that if the number of Covid-19 cases doubles one time, Singapore will have 500 patients in its healthcare system, which is what Singapore can handle. However, if the number of cases doubles a second time, there will be 1,000 patients, and “that will be a considerable burden on the hospital system”, he pointed out.
“One thousand beds is equivalent to one regional hospital,” Ong said. “So, I think the healthcare system has to brace ourselves for what is to come.” There are no plans for any form of social restrictions or any other mandatory kind of measures for now, as Covid-19 is treated as an endemic disease in Singapore, he said, adding that imposing additional measures would be a last resort.
Ong said that with Singapore being a transport and communications hub, it will be one of the cities to get a wave of Covid-19 earlier than others. “So, Covid-19 is just something that we have to live with. Every year, we should expect one or two waves,” he said. Globally, the predominant Covid-19 variants are still JN.1 and its sub-lineages, including KP.1 and KP.2. Currently, KP.1 and KP.2 account for over two-thirds of cases in Singapore.
As of May 3, the World Health Organisation has classified KP.2 as a variant under monitoring. There are currently no indications, globally or locally, that KP.1 and KP.2 are more transmissible or cause more severe disease than other circulating variants, the MOH said. However, members of the public are urged to stay updated with vaccinations to protect themselves against current and emerging virus strains. The MOH said that to date, about 80 per cent of the local population have completed their initial or additional dose, but have not received a dose within the last year.

The ministry added that since COVID-19 vaccination started in 2020 to 2021, the vaccines have consistently been proven to be safe and effective in protecting individuals from severe illness. Billions of doses have been administered globally, and safety monitoring internationally has shown that the vaccine is safe, it said. There have also been no long-term safety concerns with Covid-19 vaccination, and adverse effects from vaccines, including the mRNA vaccines, have all been observed to occur shortly after vaccination, the ministry added.

UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES MAY A NONCITIZEN BE ELIGIBLE FOR SSI?
A noncitizen (also called an "alien" for immigration purposes) may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if he or she meets the requirements of the laws for noncitizens that went into effect on August 22, 1996. In general, beginning August 22, 1996, most noncitizens must meet two requirements to be potentially eligible for SSI:

small blue and black arrowmeet a condition that allows qualified aliens to get SSI.
IMPORTANT: A noncitizen must also meet all of the other rules for SSI eligibility, including the limits on income and resources, etc.

WHO IS A QUALIFIED ALIEN?
There are 7 categories of qualified aliens. You are a qualified alien if the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says you are in one of these categories:

In addition, you can be a “deemed qualified alien” if, under certain circumstances, you, your child, or your parent were subjected to battery or extreme cruelty by a family member while in the United States.
UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS MAY A "QUALIFIED ALIEN" BE ELIGIBLE FOR SSI BENEFITS?
If you are in one of the 7 "qualified alien" categories listed above, you may be eligible for SSI if you also meet one of the following conditions:
You were receiving SSI and lawfully residing in the U.S. on August 22, 1996.
You are LAPR with 40 qualifying quarters of work.
small blue and black arrow Work done by your spouse or parent may also count toward the 40 quarters of work, but only for getting SSI.
small blue and black arrowQuarters of work earned after December 31, 1996, cannot be counted if you, your spouse, or your parent who worked, received certain benefits from the United States government, based on limited income and resources during that period.
IMPORTANT: If you entered the United States on or after August 22, 1996, then you may not be eligible for SSI for the first five years as a LAPR even if you have 40 qualifying quarters of coverage.
You are currently on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or you are an honorably discharged veteran and your discharge is not because you are a noncitizen. This condition may also apply if you are the spouse, surviving spouse, or dependent child of certain U.S. military personnel.
You were lawfully residing in the U.S. on August 22, 1996 and you are blind or have a qualifying disability.
You may receive SSI for a maximum of 7 years from the date DHS granted you immigration status in one of the following categories, and the status was granted within 7 years of filing for SSI:

NOTE For purposes of SSI eligibility, individuals are not considered qualified aliens if they were admitted to the U.S. under the provisions of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. Their eligibility is subject to the proper certification in such status by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and possession of a valid "T" non-immigrant visa. Once the noncitizen obtains proper certification and is in possession of a "T" non-immigrant visa, they become potentially eligible for SSI.
EXEMPTION
FROM THE AUGUST 22, 1996 LAWS FOR CERTAIN NONCITIZEN INDIANS
Certain categories of noncitizens may be eligible for SSI and are not subject to the August 26, 1996 law. These categories include:
small blue and black arrowAmerican Indians born in Canada who were admitted to the U.S. under Section 289 of the Immigration and Nationality Act; or
small blue and black arrownoncitizen members of a federally recognized Indian tribe under Section 4(e) of the Indian Self–Determination and Education Assistance Act.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBLE NONCITIZEN CATEGORIES
Victims of Severe Forms of Human trafficking: You may be eligible for SSI under certain circumstances if the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/orr/) and the Department of Homeland Security determines that you meet the requirements of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000.
Iraqi and Afghan Special Immigrants: If you are an Iraqi or Afghan national who was admitted to the U.S. as a special immigrant, you may qualify for seven years of SSI benefits if you served as a translator or interpreter for the U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq or Afghanistan or if you worked for the U.S. government in Iraq.
Afghan humanitarian parolee or Afghan Non-Special Immigrant Parolee: You may qualify for SSI if you are an Afghan humanitarian parolee or Afghan non-special immigrant parolee. On September 30, 2021, Congress passed the Afghanistan Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2022 (Public Law 117-43) and Section 2502 of this legislation provides that Afghan humanitarian parolees, known as Non-Special Immigrant Parolees, may qualify for SSI until March 31, 2023, or until the end of their parole period, whichever is later.
Ukrainian humanitarian parolee: You may qualify for SSI if you are a Ukraine humanitarian parolee and were paroled between February 24, 2022 and September 30, 2023 (or paroled after September 30, 2023 if you are the spouse or child of such an individual), you may qualify for SSI until the end of your parole period.
WE NEED PROOF OF YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS
If you apply for SSI benefits, you must give us proof of your immigration status, such as a current DHS admission/departure Form I-94, Form I-551, or an order from an immigration judge showing withholding of removal or granting asylum.
If you have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, you may also need to give us proof of military service such as U.S. military discharge papers (DD Form 214) showing an honorable discharge.
Your local Social Security office can tell you what other types of evidence you can submit to prove your noncitizen status.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE A SPONSOR?
When you entered the U.S., you may have had someone sign an agreement with DHS to provide support for you. We call this agreement an affidavit of support, and we call the person who signs it your sponsor. If you have a sponsor, we generally will count their (and their spouse's) income and resources as your income and resources. Your local Social Security office can give you more information about these rules and how they apply in your case.

A Panama-flagged crude oil tanker was attacked about 10 nautical miles southwest of Mokha, Ambrey said. A missile hit the vessel and there was a fire in the steering gear flat.

British maritime security firm “Ambrey” said it received a report of a crude oil tanker getting hit by a missile off the coast of Yemen.
“A Panama-flagged crude oil tanker was reportedly attacked” about 10 nautical miles southwest of Mokha, Ambrey said, adding that information "indicated the vessel was hit by a missile and that there was a fire in the steering gear flat.”
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report of a vessel "sustaining slight damage after being struck by an unknown object".
"The vessel and crew are safe and continuing to its next port of call,” UKMTO added.
Since Oct. 19, 2023, The Houthis have been targeting vessels linked with “Israel” in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has been ravaged by the “Israeli” aggression since Oct. 7, 2023.
In response, the US and the UK started carrying out strikes against Houthis targets to “protect freedom of navigation” - per their expression.
Afterwards, the Houthis declared American and British ships and interests to be legitimate targets as well.
"We will persist in upholding our religious, moral and humanitarian duties towards the Palestinian people, and our military operations will not stop unless the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted," Houthis Military Spokesperson Sare’e said.
