Multiple dead in Ukrainian strikes on Russian border region
At least four people were killed and over a dozen injured in a series of attacks on Belgorod Region, the local governor has reported
The Ukrainian forces launched multiple drone raids and artillery strikes on the city of Belgorod and several villages near the Russia-Ukraine border, which claimed the lives of four civilians while many others, including children, suffered shrapnel injuries, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov has said.
The Russian border region suffered a spate of strikes, with almost 30 incoming projectiles shot down from the skies over the course of Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, according to Gladkov. However, despite the interceptions, the attack resulted in multiple casualties.
“To much grief, the number of civilian deaths increased to 4 people,” the official wrote on Telegram.
Three of the victims were killed as a result of rocket artillery strikes on the Oktyabrsky settlement shortly before 7pm. Two of them died on the spot, while another man succumbed to “shrapnel wounds to his lower extremities” in a hospital a few hours later.
Another woman “was killed as a result of a direct hit in the yard of a private residential house in the village of Dubovoye,” Gladkov wrote around 9pm, adding that she “was in a greenhouse at the time of the attack and died of her injuries before the ambulance arrived.”
While there were no casualties in the city of Belgorod itself, at least two apartment buildings suffered heavy damage as a result of direct artillery hits. Two schools were damaged by blasts and shrapnel, while several commercial buildings also had their facades, windows and roofs partially destroyed. Several vehicles were damaged and were burned entirely, according to videos from the scene.
By midnight, the number of those injured across the region reached at least 16 people, including at least two children.
A 8-year-old boy who was wounded in the shelling of the Oktyabrsky settlement suffered a “blast injury and external trauma to the lumbar back region,” Gladkov wrote, adding that the child’s “condition has been characterized as of medium severity.”
In another incident, a 9-year-old girl was injured when a “moving car was attacked by a drone on the highway between the village of Borisovka and the hamlet of Plotvyanka in the Volokonovsky district,” Gladkov added.

24 GOP Governors Tell Biden Not To Sign WHO Pandemic Agreement
Governors from 24 states have joined together to speak out against treaty negotiations being conducted by the Biden administration, which “would purport to grant” the World Health Organisation (WHO) “unprecedented and unconstitutional powers over the United States and its people.”
“The objective of these instruments is to empower the WHO, particularly its uncontrollable Director-General, with the authority to restrict the rights of U.S. citizens, including freedoms such as speech, privacy, travel, choice of medical care, and informed consent, thus violating our Constitution’s core principles,” the governors wrote. “If adopted, these agreements would seek to elevate the WHO from an advisory body to a global authority in public health.”
The documents they refer to are a new treaty called the WHO pandemic agreement and amendments to the existing International Health Regulations (IHRs), which together would centralize a significant amount of authority within this United Nations subsidiary if the WHO declares a state of “health emergency.”
Governors from the following states signed the letter: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
As the negotiations among member nations move into their final phase before the start of the voting session at the World Health Assembly, scheduled to begin on May 27, the WHO appears to have scaled back some of the powers it had sought in hopes of finalizing a deal.
The latest IHR draft has deleted a prior provision that member nations “recognize WHO as the guiding and coordinating authority of international public health response” and commit to following the WHO’s directives during a health emergency. The latest draft also states that WHO recommendations are non-binding.
The WHO had attempted in previous drafts to obtain powers over “all risks with the potential to impact public health,” which could include environmental and climate issues. The latest draft seeks to limit the WHO’s authority to diseases.
The WHO has simultaneously launched a public relations campaign, using politicians, celebrities, and religious leaders, to encourage member states to sign the agreements.
On March 20, WHO ambassador and Britain’s former Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised the efforts of a “100+ pantheon of global leaders” that have come to the WHO’s defense.
“A high-powered intervention by 23 former national Presidents, 22 former Prime Ministers, a former UN General Secretary, and 3 Nobel Laureates is being made today to press for an urgent agreement from international negotiators on a Pandemic Accord, under the Constitution of the World Health Organization, to bolster the world’s collective preparedness and response to future pandemics,” Mr. Brown stated in a press release.
He called for an international effort to “expose fake news disinformation campaigns by conspiracy theorists trying to torpedo international agreement for the Pandemic Accord.”
“No country will cede any sovereignty, and no country will see their national laws set aside,” he declared.

'Hitler would be proud' of the rise in antisemitic acts targeting Australia's Jewish community, warns Peter Cosgrove
Sir Peter Cosgrove has delivered a stark message to those people carrying out antisemitic acts targeting Australia’s Jewish community, warning "Hitler would be proud".
Former governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove has delivered a chilling warning to people showing antisemitic behaviour towards Australia’s Jewish community.
His comments come in a new documentary on Sky News Australia, presented by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg, examining the rise of antisemitism across the country following Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel last year on October 7.
Asked by Mr Frydenberg what his message would be to those people carrying out antisemitic acts towards the Jewish community, Mr Cosgrove said "Hitler would be proud".
"Hitler put in a place the Holocaust that was aimed primarily at Jewish people," Mr Cosgrove said.
"And in watching what's happening today in Australia, Hitler would be giving thumbs up to those radical elements who are trying to breach this great pillar of Australia's national character."
Former ASIO director-general Dennis Richardson said while the country is seeing echoes of the 1930s in the boycotting of Jewish businesses and community intimidation, he was confident Australia would overcome this wave.
"We're seeing worrying signs of it," he told Mr Frydenberg.
"However, I come back to what I've said before, I believe that our democratic institutions are strong enough to withstand this. And I believe we will, in fact, defeat it.
"Because any echoes of the 1930s is pure evil and I believe the vast majority of Australians simply wouldn't tolerate it."
