Chase Bank Building Explodes in Downtown Youngstown, Ohio — One Missing, Six Hospitalized
Crews pulled people from a building and took them to the hospital following an explosion in downtown Youngstown.
The explosion happened just before 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Realty building on E. Federal Street. Crews evacuated people from the top floors, where there are apartments.
Chase Bank is located at the bottom of the building. A representative of Chase Bank said they are in contact with local officials to check on the safety of everyone in the building, and after that, they will assess the damage.
Those in the area reported hearing a loud boom that shook buildings, followed by smoke and the smell of gas.
“I heard the boom, and I looked up and I could see dark smoke coming out of the side of the Chase Bank building… but it was such a really strong, strong boom, you know, I blurted out, ‘Oh my God,'” said Debora Flora, executive director of Mahoning County Land Bank who works downtown.
Seven people are receiving treatment related to the explosion at Mercy Health, with one patient in critical condition, a Mercy Health spokesperson confirmed.
Fire Chief Barry Finley initially said there was one person who was unaccounted for. His wife and coworker reported that he came to work at the bank, and crews have so far been unable to locate him.
Finley later confirmed a second missing person, who he said is a woman.
Finley said everyone else in the building has been located.
“The floor is collapsed in on itself, there’s nothing to see, it’s full of water, so honestly, we don’t know if that person is down there or not. When we get clearance to go into the building… until then, I will not put any of my firefighters down there to do a search for any reason right now,” he said.
“A lot of emotions right now because one of my friends was in the bank across the street, and he went in and grabbed people, and I don’t know, I haven’t seen him since,” said a witness, Taylor Botsford.
Those living in the evacuated apartments also talked about the emotional scene.
“When I got to the lobby, there was kind of like a metal gate door that had been bowed in, and the rubble from the lobby… the broken-up rock and marble had jammed itself so I was there with my cat in a carrier kind of trying to push the door open,” said resident Justin Reynolds.
“It’s things — people are more important than that, but I’m just hoping that they get everyone that’s injured, get them treatment. We’ll worry about this stuff later,” said resident Jason Small.
Crews are now working to determine the structural integrity of the building. Gas has been shut off to the entire block as a safety precaution, according to a spokesperson for Enbridge Gas Ohio. The spokesperson added that the cause of the explosion is not known at this time.
Police have blocked off a perimeter around the area, blocking people and vehicles from going nearby. Drivers should avoid the area.
Right now, north and southbound Market Street and Wick Avenue, and Federal Street from Phelps Street to Walnut Street are closed.
Finley said he is not allowing anyone into the nearby DoubleTree hotel at this time, but residents of International Towers are allowed to return home.
WRTA bus routes have been affected, as buses were not permitted to leave or enter the WRTA’s station downtown. WRTA asked riders to check its website or the WRTA Facebook page for further route updates
The Red Cross was at the Covelli Centre, assisting the displaced residents of the building for a time on Tuesday evening. A representative from the Red Cross said all residents from the building next door are able to return to their homes.
There are 25-30 residents from the building that were directly impacted by the explosion, the Red Cross reports. The organization is working with property management to let residents know the Red Cross can provide assistance should they need it.

Palestinian Territory – Israel continues to ignore orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), including the Court’s most recent ruling. This ruling requires Israel to halt its military assault on the Rafah Governorate in the southern Gaza Strip and reopen the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the movement of people and humanitarian aid. In the 48 hours that followed the ICJ’s ruling on Friday 24 May, however, Israel conducted more than 60 air raids on Rafah.
