China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".
The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.
Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.
Beijingās envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".
He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.
"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.
In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as āoppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian peopleās right to self-determination".
The ICJās public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.
The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.
Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.
International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

In the early modern period, a court Jew, or court factor (German: Hofjude, Hoffaktor; Yiddish: ×××£ ×××, romanized: Hoyf Id, ק×Ö·××Ø× ×¤×ַק××Ö·×Ø, Kourt Faktor), was a Jewish banker who handled the finances of, or lent money to, European,
mainly German, royalty and nobility. In return for their services, court Jews gained social privileges, including, in some cases, being granted noble status.
Examples of what would be later called court Jews emerged in the High Middle Ages[a] when the royalty, the nobility, and the church borrowed money from money changers or employed them as financiers.
Among the most notable of these were Aaron of Lincoln and Vivelin of Strasbourg.
Jewish financiers could use their family connections to provide their sponsors with finance, food, arms, ammunition, gold, and precious metals.[citation needed]
The rise of the absolute monarchies in Central Europe brought many Jews, mostly of Ashkenazi origin, into the position of negotiating loans for the various courts.
They could amass personal fortunes and gain political and social influence. However, the court Jew had social connections and influence in the Christian world mainly through the Christian nobility and church.
Due to the precarious position of Jews, some nobles could ignore their debts. If the sponsoring noble died, his Jewish financier could face exile or execution.
The most famous example of this occurred in WĆ¼rttemberg when, after the death of his sponsor Charles Alexander in 1737, Joseph SĆ¼Ć Oppenheimer was put on trial and finally executed.[1]
In an effort to avoid such fate, some court bankers in the late 18th centuryāsuch as Samuel Bleichrƶder, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, or Aron Elias Seligmannāsuccessfully detached their businesses from these courts
and established what eventually developed into full-fledged banks.[2]
Prohibited from nearly every other trade, some Jews began to occupy an economic niche as moneylenders in the Middle Ages. Only they were allowed to take interest on loans,
sinceāwhile the Church condemned usury universallyācanon law was only applied to Christians and not to Jews. Eventually, a sizable sector of the Jewish community were engaged in financial occupations,
and the community was a financially highly successful part of the medieval economy.[3][4] The religious restrictions on moneylending had inadvertently created a source of monopoly rents,
causing profits associated with moneylending to be higher than they otherwise would have been.[5]
By most parameters, the standard of living of the Jewish community in Early Medieval period was at least equal to that of the lower nobility.[6]

The Committee on House Administrations Oversight panel met to hear testimonies from whistleblowers on why it took so long for the National Guard to respond to the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
Lawmakers met for witness testimony in a hearing called āThree Years Later: D.C. National Guard Whistleblowers Speak Out on January 6 Delayā on Wednesday.
Chairman Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) kicked off the hearing by shedding light on a November 2021 report from the Department of Defenseās Acting Inspector General. The report detailed the DODās response to January 6th, claiming that the National Guard was deployed as soon as possible.
However, the Georgia Republican said it took three hours and 19 minutes to deploy troops on January 6th after receiving orders.
Those testifying Wednesday included:
Colonel Earl Matthews ā Chief Legal Advisor, D.C. Army National Guard
Command Sergeant Major Michael Brooks ā Senior Enlisted Officer, D.C. Army National Guard
Captain Timothy Nick ā Aide-de-camp, D.C. Army National Guard
Brigadier General Aaron Dean ā Adjutant General, D.C. Army National Guard
In regards to the Inspector Generalās 2021 report, Loudermilk said the report concludes that the leader of the National Guard response, Maj. Gen. William Walker, received two orders from then U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy to deploy troops to the Capitol, once at 4:45 pm and again at 5:00 pm.
āWalker denies that either of these calls took place,ā Loudermilk said. āDespite the many inconsistencies and contradictions of the DODās responsibility that day, the select committee on January 6th ignored these discrepancies despite them being shared privately by their own staff and barreled forward with the DODās side of the story.ā
The hearing comes after the oversight panel published a never-before released transcribed interview from Trumpās former White House deputy chief of staff Anthony Ornato, which showed that the former president offered 10,000 National troops to secure the Capitol. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D-Washington D.C.), however, rejected the call.
Loudermilk said the now-defunct January select committee withheld Ornatoās ācritical witness testimony from the American people because it contradicted their predetermined narrative.ā
Colonel Earl Matthews accused two senior officers of the army, Gen. Charles Flynn and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt of lying to Congress and federal investigators about why it took so long to deploy the National Guard.
āThat DOD IG report is replete with incorrect, false information,ā Matthews asserted.
The inspector general blamed the delay on lack of coordination but all witnesses said the National Guard was ready, had the DOD told them to go when they were supposed to.
Matthews sent a memo to the House J6 committee as well as a Senate committee accusing the Army officers of misleading Congress after the 2021 report.
Since coming forward, Matthews hasnāt been promoted. This comes after a promotion board in November 2022 recommended he was one of the ābest qualifiedā group of Army Reserve colonels to be promoted to brigadier general.
He later filed a complaint alleging retaliation for testifying to Congress and asked for those responsible to be reprimanded.
āIf public confidence in the integrity of government operations is to be restored,ā the complaint said, āhe must be made whole and the responsible officials appropriately disciplined.ā
Also during Wednesdayās testimony, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Brooks, said the delay was due to Secretary McCarthy and other officials being more concerned about āoptics.ā
āI have no idea why we never received that order,ā Brooks said. āAll I do know is that they were more concerned with what it would look like with soldiers with the Capitol in the background than protecting the Capitol of the united states.ā
Loudermilk said the hearing left them with more questions that need to be answered.
