Kremlin: NATO Weapons To Be Hit In Any Country From Where Russia May Be Attacked

Predictably, the Kremlin is fuming at widespread reports that the Biden administration has made a U-turn on its policy which previously prohibited Ukraine from attack Russian soil with US-supplied weaponry.

Former Russian president and current Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has warned that Russian forces could strike back from any point where attacks are launched, including on "NATO specialists" advising Ukraine forces.

"NATO countries that have approved strikes with their weapons on Russian territory should be aware that their equipment and specialists will be destroyed not only in Ukraine, but also at any point from where Russian territory is attacked," he said on Telegram, according to TASS, also noting that "the participation of NATO specialists could be seen as a casus belli."

"All their military equipment and specialists fighting against us will be destroyed both on the territory of former Ukraine and on the territory of other countries, should strikes be carried out from there against Russian territory," Medvedev added in the warning.

He said that contrary to much of the West's attempts to obfuscate the reality, Ukraine's long-rage missile systems are actually "directly operated by servicemen from NATO countries." He said this is tantamount to these countries' direct participation in the war.

NATO Chief Pushes Allies To Commit $44 Billion In Defense Aid To Ukraine Annually

Currently NATO defense and foreign ministers are gathered in Prague for two days of meetings as part of preparations for the major Washington Summit in July. At the meeting chaired by the alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg he urged that NATO countries must maintain support to Ukraine "for as long as necessary".

Stoltenberg is asking 32 NATO members to commit a whopping $44 billion in military aid to Ukraine every year. President Zelensky has been urging more immediate aid to come at a faster rate, meanwhile.

Stoltenberg told the meeting in Prague, "Russia must understand that it cannot wait us out." He reasoned further that "Allies have provided approximately 40 billion euros worth of military aid to Ukraine each year."

He said that for Ukraine to have battlefield success, NATO countries must maintain "at least" current levels of support to Ukraine for as long as the fight continues.

Even though it has become clear that Ukraine front lines are crumbling, especially in places like Kharkiv oblast near the Russian border, this new initiative by Stoltenberg appears geared toward locking the alliance into further permanent commitments, lest any should waiver down the road.

According to analysis by the Austin-based Libertarian Institute:

Under the $100 billion proposal, counties would contribute aid equal to their financial commitment to the alliance. The US pays for about a quarter of NATO’s annual budget. If Stoltenberg seeks to lock in member states at their current commitment, the US will contribute over half of all aid, about $25 billion annually.

NATO has been seeking a multi-year pledge from its members to supply arms to Ukraine. The commitment is meant to lock in assistance for Kiev even if a nation would later decide to alter course. The initial proposal from Stoltenberg was for NATO to commit $108 billion over five years.

Meanwhile a US official speaking to The New York Times has said the conflict has entered "a new reality" and "perhaps a new era" after Thursday's White House decision to allow Ukraine to strike inside Russian territory using US-supplied weapons systems.

Under the doctrine, the First Amendment’s free speech protections extend beyond prohibiting the government from suppressing speech — the doctrine also bars the government from compelling people to express ideas or beliefs they don’t want to affirm.

In recent months and years, corporations have invoked this argument to resist regulation on issues ranging from drug pricing to hazardous chemical disclosures, to food nutritional information to censoring online speech.

“Experts say the large corporations using this strategy are undermining efforts to regulate corporate behavior. They say these arguments limit states’ ability to act on matters not covered by federal law,” Li wrote.

The most recent example of this legal strategy is happening in California, Li wrote, where a new emissions disclosure law requires all companies with annual revenues over $1 billion to disclose the pollution emitted throughout their supply chains.

USAID Contractor Forced Out Over Presentation on Palestinian Maternal and Child Mortality

A contractor for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was forced out of his job over a disagreement on a presentation he prepared on maternal and child mortality among Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, The Guardian reported on Thursday.

Alexander Smith worked for USAID as a senior advisor on gender, maternal health, child health, and nutrition. He was scheduled to present the paper on mortality at an internal USAID conference, and it was initially cleared. But it caught the attention of officials in the USAID’s Middle East department, who asked for redactions to be made.

Smith told The Guardian that the edits they requested involved removing a slide describing the applicable international law and removing any language that implied the recognition of a Palestinian state, including names of UN agencies that include the word “Palestine.”

USAID leadership ended up canceling the presentation altogether and claims it was outside of Smith’s area of responsibility, but he said his expertise on maternal and child health is relevant to all humanitarian crises. Two days after his presentation was canceled, Smith was told by his direct employer, the Highbury Defense Group, which has government contracts with USAID, that his contract would be terminated early.

Highbury said that Smith’s contract would be terminated over “personality differences” and that USAID was unhappy with him despite his years of performance on the job and years of positive reviews of his work. Smith was given the option to resign and wrote a scathing resignation letter.

“USAID has always prided itself on our programs supporting democracy, human rights, and rule of law. In Ukraine, we call for legal redress when people are victimized and name perpetrators of violence … We boldly state ‘Slava Ukraini’ in peppy promotional videos,” he wrote.

“When it comes to the Palestinians, however, we avoid saying anything about their right to statehood, the abuses they’re currently suffering, or which powers have been violating their basic rights to freedom, self-determination, livelihoods, and clean water,” he added.

The news of Smith’s resignation makes him the ninth US official to publicly step down over President Biden’s full-throated support for Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. Josh Paul, who resigned from the State Department in October, said dozens more have stepped down quietly and that he expects more resignations to come.

The Independent previously reported on the widespread dissent within USAID. The investigation found that 19 dissent memos had been sent within the department to criticize US support for Israel.

The Biden administration has given Ukraine permission to use US-provided weapons to hit targets inside Russian territory, POLITICO reported Thursday, a step that marks a significant escalation of the proxy war.

US officials said Ukraine will be able to use US weapons to shoot down Russian missiles inside Russia that are fired toward Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. They will also be able to hit Russian military units that are just over the border in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast.

The US officials insisted Ukraine would not be able to use US-provided missiles for attacks on civilian infrastructure or for long-range attacks on military targets that are deep inside Russia.

“The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use US weapons for counter-fire purposes in Kharkiv so Ukraine can hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them,” a US official told POLITICO. The official insisted the US still would not support long-range strikes on Russian territory.

Ukraine needs support from the US for targeting when it fires US-provided missiles, which means the US will now be directly supporting strikes inside Russia. The escalation risks provoking a major response from Russia, as Moscow recently warned the UK that it would target British military sites in Ukraine and “beyond” if British missiles were used in strikes on Russian territory. Over the past year, both US and British missiles have been used to target Crimea.

The news comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted that the US was preparing to change the policy, saying the US will “adapt and adjust” when asked if Urkaine could strike Russian territory with US weapons.

The New York Times previously reported that the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US weapons were put in place as part of President Biden’s plans to “avoid World War III.” But throughout the war, the US and other NATO countries have taken escalations they previously ruled out due to fear of provoking Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any NATO countries that let Ukraine strike Russia with their weapons would face “major consequences.”

The original resolution at the World Health Organization (WHO) did not call for the release of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, but the Israeli delegation succeeded in amending the resolution.

The Israeli delegation to the World Health Organization succeeded to introduce on Thursday an amendment to the Israel-Hamas war resolution which included a demand for the unconditional release of the hostages held by Hamas.

The original resolution did not refer to the actions of Hamas or the developments that led to the situation in the Gaza Strip, which prompted the Israeli delegation in Geneva to submit the amendment, Ynet noted in their report.

The amendment put forth by the Israeli delegation condemned Hamas's use of health facilities, including ambulances and hospitals for terror purposes, while putting the civilian population at risk.

50 countries supported the amendment, and it was immediately included in the text, Ynet also reported. The Palestinians, along with their supporters, refused to vote in favor of the resolution that called for the release of the hostages, and were working to cancel it.

Meirav Eilon Shahar, Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva was quoted by Ynet as calling for all countries and the World Health Organization to condemn Hamas’s terrorist attacks and their exploitation of hospitals and ambulances for terrorist purposes.

Leadership overhaul at Raytheon Australia amid tensions with government over massive weapons project

An American defence company chosen to help set up a missile production enterprise in Australia has removed senior figures from its local business following tensions with the Albanese government over the multi-billion-dollar project.

Raytheon Australia's managing director Michael Ward and other members of the leadership team are departing just two years after the firm was selected as a "strategic partner" for the Sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise (GWEO).

In a statement emailed to staff this week and obtained by the ABC, Raytheon's global vice-president Chander Nijhon announced the overhaul of the company's Australian leadership "effective immediately".

"After 24 years of service, Michael Ward has retired from the company. While we conduct an extensive search for his replacement, Ohad Katz will serve as interim managing director," Mr Nijhon said.

"Gerard Foley, chief of growth; Des McNicholas, chief of people and culture; Sarah Valentine, chief of corporate services; and Carly Habils, head of corporate services, have also left the company," the message to over 1,400 local employees confirmed.

"As we move through this transition, we will reaffirm our commitment to being a true values-based organisation," the Raytheon vice-president wrote.

"We will also take the opportunity to strengthen our culture by living our values, building trust, demonstrating respect, holding each other accountable, and affirming our focus on innovation and collaboration across the business".

In April 2022, then defence minister Peter Dutton announced Raytheon Australia along with the US-owned company Lockheed Martin Australia had been selected as the "strategic partners" to establish the ambitious GWEO enterprise.

The GWEO project aims to "accelerate the establishment of a local long-range guided weapons and munitions manufacturing industry" and is led by experienced defence engineer and program manager Air Marshal Leon Phillips.

However, defence and industry sources say for the past year Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy has grown increasingly frustrated with Raytheon Australia's approach to GWEO, particularly not cooperating with the Terms of Trade.

"Raytheon is trying to explain to the minister why his current GWEO plan is destined to fail, but [Mr] Conroy doesn't want to hear it, while Lockheed Martin Australia are just saying yes to a whole bunch of impossible things," one industry insider has told the ABC.

Raytheon Australia did not respond to questions from the ABC, while Mr Conroy's office also declined to comment on the company's sudden leadership overhaul.
