Scientists Warn Tattoos May Increase Cancer Risk

Updated May 30, 2024 at 4:59 AM EDT

Scientists have warned of an urgent need for more research into the long-term health impacts of tattoos after new research found they may increase the risk of lymphoma cancer.

Roughly one third of Americans have at least one tattoo, 2023 Pew Research Center surveys show. However, very little is known about the long-term effects on our health of getting inked.

"We have identified people diagnosed with lymphoma via population registers," Christel Nielsen, who led the study, said in a statement. "These individuals were then matched with a control group of the same sex and age, but without lymphoma. The study participants answered a questionnaire about lifestyle factors to determine whether they were tattooed or not.

"After taking into account other relevant factors, such as smoking and age, we found that the risk of developing lymphoma was 21 percent higher among those who were tattooed."

The exact mechanisms behind this association are still a mystery, but Nielsen said it was likely something to do with how our bodies respond to the tattoo ink. "We already know that when the tattoo ink is injected into the skin, the body interprets this as something foreign that should not be there and the immune system is activated," Nielsen said. "A large part of the ink is transported away from the skin to the lymph nodes where it is deposited."

Because of this, the team had expected those with larger tattoos to be at a greater risk of lymphoma than those with smaller ones, because there is more ink in their bodies to respond to. However, the size did not seem to matter.

"We do not yet know why this was the case," Nielsen said. "One can only speculate that a tattoo, regardless of size, triggers a low-grade inflammation in the body, which in turn can trigger cancer. The picture is thus more complex than we initially thought."

These findings are purely associative, and more work needs to be done to verify them and prove that the tattoo ink is actually causing the increased risk of lymphoma. The team also hope to explore whether tattoos can increase our risk of other cancers and inflammatory diseases.

"People will likely want to continue to express their identity through tattoos, and therefore it is very important that we as a society can make sure that it is safe," Nielsen said. "For the individual, it is good to know that tattoos can affect your health, and that you should turn to your health care provider if you experience symptoms that you believe could be related to your tattoo."

CA Sheriff ā€˜Tiredā€™ of Dems Jailbreaking Criminals Declares Heā€™s Voting Trump

June 3rd 2024, 1:56 pm

The sheriff of a California county is splitting with his stateā€™s predominant political party and says heā€™ll vote for Republican Donald Trump in November, slamming Democrat bail reform policies letting criminals out of jail.

In an Instagram post over the weekend, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco blasted the catch-and-release of criminals leading to them being recycled back into neighborhoods, effectively countering his efforts to keep communities safe.

Bianco said heā€™s ā€œgetting tiredā€ of the lax crime policies and decided heā€™s ā€œgonna change teams,ā€ going on to ask others to join him.

ā€œI think itā€™s time that, instead of letting them out of jail and giving them alcohol and drugs and everything else, I think itā€™s time we put a felon in the White House,ā€ Sheriff Bianco said, adding, ā€œTrump 2024, baby. Letā€™s save this country and make America great again.ā€

Read a transcript of Sheriff Biancoā€™s post below:

Hello, California Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. You know for the past 30 years, Iā€™ve been doing everything I could to keep our community safe by arresting criminals and putting them in jail and putting them in prison, keeping them out of our neighborhoods for the last five years. Iā€™ve been very critical about our governor for slashing our budgets from corrections, for letting prisoners out early, for closing our prisons. Iā€™ve been critical of our state legislature for passing laws to make it harder to put people in prison. Iā€™ve been critical for their changing laws that let prisoners out early, and Iā€™ve been critical for our attorney general for seemingly not caring about crime and really being an embarrassment to law enforcement.

And this love affair that our governor and our state legislature have with criminals is based on the belief that criminals are not responsible for their own actions. Theyā€™re victim of society and really itā€™sā€¦itā€™s our fault. Itā€™s societyā€™s fault. Itā€™s businessesā€™ fault. Itā€™s cops fault. It might be my fault. Law enforcement, apparently if you listen to our governor, is systemically racist. If you listen to our legislature, our laws are systemically racist, our judicial system is systemically racist. All of these people that are being put in jail, or because of law enforcement bias, and DA bias, and all of these things. And so they let them out, they give them food. They give them housing. They give them money, they give them drugs and alcohol now.

And, I got to be honest, Iā€™m getting tired. Iā€™m getting tired and Iā€™m wondering if Iā€™m having a change of heart and deciding that, ā€˜You know what? Maybe Iā€™ve been wrong.ā€™

And I think Iā€™m gonna change teams. I know itā€™s gonna make some of you angry. I know that youā€™re gonna be mad at me, but Iā€™m gonna change teams. I think theyā€™re onto something, but I donā€™t think theyā€™re doing enough. I think that we need to go big. You know me, go big or go home. Youā€™re the biggest, you do the best. Youā€™re the best at everything, and you might as well do something right if youā€™re gonna do it. And Iā€™m all in. And I hope that youā€™re all with me. I hope that you all have this change of heart. You all feel that this is definitely the right thing to do, and you come alongside me in this venture. And I think itā€™s time that, instead of letting them out of jail and giving them alcohol and drugs and everything else, I think itā€™s time we put a felon in the White House. Trump 2024, baby. Letā€™s save this country and make America great again.

The nation definitely needs more Trump-supporting sheriffs and law enforcement officials across the country to take a cue from Sheriff Bianco!
