i've watched it countless times with grandkids. my takeaway is beware of strangers bearing gifts. in the movie, the only bird who vocalized his concern was shot down by everyone else…led by the magistrate….the falsely tall OWL. Red Bird was sent to anger management for civil disobedience he inflicted on what HE saw as a false symbol…the happy wooden bird. the green pigs first arrived slowly bearing smiles, gifts, bread, and circuses. but then they began to talk of things foreign to the birds…other lands with other promises. the pigs stole the eggs of the birds and when Red found out the pigs were eating the living eggs he tried again to convince the birds the pigs were dangerous…even evil. it wasn't until the pigs ultimately destroyed Bird Island did the birds wake up and look for help. well, they had been taught since they were chicks about the heroic exploits of Mighty Eagle, now retired and living in a cave high on a cliff. so a handful of brave birds from bird island set out on a quest to find Mighty Eagle and to convince him to come help them. But M.E. was older, out of shape, basking in his glory and told them to take care of it themselves. when he finally saw for himself how much trouble his 'people' were in, he cleaned up, detoxed, got in shape, and put together an army of patriotic birds to attack Piggy Island to get their children back. In the end, the peaceful birds, with the help of Mighty Eagle, restored their island to it's original beauty with a populace now wide-awake and ever vigilent.
we are watching a movie. i believe many real movies have been an allegorical teaching tool that, maybe, wouldn't be proven as valid until future events reflected their lesson.
