Feds Indict Far-Right Media Exec [EPOCH TIMES] in Massive Money Laundering Scheme

Bill Guan, the chief financial officer of the far-right Epoch Times, was indicted Monday on charges of allegedly participating in a massive money laundering scheme.

The Southern District of New York released a statement saying, “Bill Guan, 61, of Secaucus, New Jersey, is charged with one count of conspiring to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and two counts of bank fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. The charges do not relate to the Media Company’s newsgathering activities.”

Guan is alleged to have laundered some $67 million in funds. The Epoch Times was founded in 2000 by John Tang and is associated with the Chinese Falun Gong new religious movement. The paper, which is part of the Epoch Media Group, is known for its conspiratorial articles, vehement opposition to the Chinese Communist Party, and socially conservative values.

NBC News reported in late 2023, based on subscriber count, the paper has the 4th largest circulation in the U.S. “The nonprofit has amassed a fortune, growing its revenue by a staggering 685% in two years, to $122 million in 2021, according to the group’s most recent tax record,” noted NBC of the publication’s wild success.

As alleged, Bill Guan, the Chief Financial Officer of a global newspaper and media company, conspired with others to benefit himself, the media company, and its affiliates by laundering tens of millions of dollars in fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits and other crime proceeds. When banks raised questions about the funds, Guan allegedly lied repeatedly and falsely claimed that the funds came from legitimate donations to the media company. Today’s charges reflect this Office’s ongoing commitment to vigorously enforcing the laws against those who facilitate fraud through money laundering and to protecting the integrity of the U.S. financial system.

US has highest maternal mortality rate among wealthy nations: Study

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4702975-maternal-mortality-rate-us-highest-wealthy-nations-study

The United States continues to have the highest rate of maternal deaths among wealthy nations despite a dip in the rate at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new report from The Commonwealth Fund compared the U.S.’s maternal mortality rate of about 22 deaths per 100,000 live births to those of other high-income nations in Europe, Asia, South America and Oceania.

The analysis found that the U.S.’s current rate, which was calculated using 2022 data, was still far higher than those in other similarly well-off countries.

Nordic countries and Switzerland had the lowest maternal mortality rates out of the 17 countries included in the report, with Norway reporting zero maternal deaths in 2022.

In the U.S., Black women are at the highest risk of dying from maternal causes, with a maternal mortality rate of more than twice the national average, the report shows.

More than 60 percent of maternal deaths occur after delivery, with two out of three of those deaths taking place in the postpartum period, which starts a day after delivery and ends a year after giving birth.

Severe bleeding, high blood pressure and infection are the most common causes of maternal deaths during the first week of the postpartum period, the report notes, while heart muscle disease is the leading cause of death in the following postpartum weeks and months.

>Most of these deaths — nearly 80 percent — are preventable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Wisconsin attorney general files felony charges against attorneys, aide who worked for Trump in 2020

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul filed felony forgery charges Tuesday against two attorneys and an aide who helped submit paperwork falsely saying that former President Donald Trump had won the battleground state in 2020.

The state charges are the first to come in Wisconsin and follow separate charges brought in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Georgia related to the fake electors scheme.

The Wisconsin charges were filed against Trump’s attorney in the state, Jim Troupis, 62, attorney Kenneth Chesebro, 62, who was advising the campaign and Mike Roman, 51, who was Trump’s director of Election Day operations. Roman allegedly delivered Wisconsin’s fake elector paperwork to a Pennsylvania congressman’s staffer in order to get them to then-Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6, 2021.

All three are due in Dane County Circuit Court on Sept. 19, according to court records. They each face one felony count punishable by up to six years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. Troupis and Chesebro did not return voicemail messages left Tuesday. Roman’s attorney, Kurt Altman, said he just learned of the charges Tuesday morning and was in the process of reviewing them.
