Cheyenne Substitute Teacher Says He Was Kicked Out For Not Using Trans Names
A substitute teacher says heâs been barred from a Cheyenne-based school district after refusing to use preferred transgender names of students.
Gene Clemetson was escorted out of East High School in Laramie County School District No. 1 while substitute teaching in March, he told Cowboy State Daily in a recent interview.
The conflict began when a student whom Clemetson described as a boy identifying as a girl approached Clemetson and asked to be called by an alternate name.
âI said to him, very politely, I have to go by the name on the roster,â Clemetson recounted.
The student returned with another teacher, who said the studentâs parents had approved of the school using the alternate name.
âWell thatâs great, but again, if Iâm calling the attendance, if Iâm calling the roll, Iâm going by the names officially registered with the district,â Clemetson recalls saying.
Clemetson told Cowboy State Daily that if a student were to legally change his or her name, then Clemetson would call the student by the studentâs new name. He said he resists a trend of bowing to peopleâs fleeting âwhim or frivolityâ about the names issue.
Then the principal confronted Clemetson about the alternate name, he said.
âHe proceeded to tell me I did not fit in at East High School, that I was not welcome back,â Clemetson said. âAnd he proceeded to tell me he was going to report me to the administration and then had me escorted out of the building by his vice principal.â
On another occasion in the spring semester, Clemetson was substitute teaching at Triumph High School.
Again, a student whom Clemetson described as a âyoung ladyâ approached asking to be called by an alternate name. The student became upset when Clemetson refused, he recalled.
He said the principal at Triumph also asked him to leave the building and that the human resources department would be contacting him.

Philippine government open to US request to become âprocessing centreâ for future Afghan refugees
MANILA â The government is âopen to the ideaâ of the Philippines serving as a âprocessing areaâ for Afghan nationals displaced by their homelandâs conflict before they are resettled in the United States, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official said on Tuesday.
One year after a Senate inquiry was launched to tackle Washingtonâs request, Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez told reporters that talks with the US Embassy regarding the details of a possible agreement were still ongoing.
âInitially, we discussed [hosting] a few hundred [Afghan nationals] and if it works out, then weâll accommodate more,â he said.
Vasquez added that their main concern was the countryâs national security. âThe other side wants to fast-track it but we are very careful on this matter because once theyâre here, we have treaty obligations and it would be difficult to interfere.â
The DOJ official disclosed the development during the launch of the countryâs first-ever National Refugee Day set on June 20.
Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo previously said that the US government formalized its proposal in October 2022 through a âconcept noteâ sent to Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez.
Manalo said the Afghans, who would not be considered refugees according to the DOJ, would only stay in the Philippines briefly while waiting for the US to approve their special immigration visas.
Short-term stay
The Afghan nationals are former and current workers employed by the United States in Afghanistan, as well as their families, according to Romualdez.
He said that the US government told him they would be housed in the Philippines for âtwo weeks at the mostâ while the cost of their stay would also be shouldered by the US government.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, in a speech delivered by Vasquez at Tuesdayâs event announcing the countryâs first National Refugee Day on June 20, said the move signified âour commitment to our long humanitarian legacy of opening our doors and providing support to people who have crossed international borders to seek safety and protection.â
The DOJ estimates that there are âa thousandâ recognized refugees in the Philippines, mostly from Middle Eastern and African countries.
Maria Ermina Valdeavilla-Gallardo, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office in Manila, said that globally, more than 114 million people have been forced to flee their homes by the end of September 2023, due to conflict, persecution and human rights violations.

Report: J6 Committee Delayed Secret Service Driver From Refuting False Limo Story
Just the News is reporting that the January 6th Committee rebuffed repeated efforts from a Secret Service agent to refute the false story related by Cassidy Hutchinson alleging a violent episode with Trump in the presidential limousine during the Capitol riots. The J6 Committee staff repeatedly delayed the testimony of the agent to disprove the widely reported allegation.
Rep. Barry Loudermilk, the chairman of the House subcommittee that is investigating the Jan. 6 riot, has obtained a transcript of the driverâs interview that was conducted months after he first offered to testify. However, it turns out that committee staff were asked repeatedly by counsel for the agent to let him present evidence debunking the claim. Despite being reported by virtually every news outlet, the Committee slow walked his appearance as the story went viral.
The transcript of the driverâs testimony contains express objections by the lawyer that his client had offered to testify in July, August and September of 2022, but was ârebuffedâ by the committee.
The account reaffirms a major criticism of the committee. After Democrats refused to allow the GOP to pick its members (as a long-accepted practice in the House), the Democrats selected two anti-Trump Republicans who did little to push for a full and fair display of witnesses and facts. The Committee was chaired by Rep. Benny Thompson, a Democrat, with Rep. Liz Cheney, as Vice Chairwoman.
Cheney and the committee members clearly knew that Hutchinsonâs account was debunked by the very driver who allegedly struggled with Trump. Yet, they allowed the media to report the incident for months while rebuffing the requests of the driver. Loudermilk is quoted as saying âWeâre talking about the driver of the limousine, and the head of the entire protective detail. They were brought in by the select committee to testify, but they werenât brought in until November.â
The false account was given by Hutchinson in June of that year.
The Secret Service driver testified Trump never tried to reach for or grab the wheel of the SUV.
