‘Has the West Successfully Demonized Russia?’ RT panel: Key takeaways

Western media and officials are engaged in a battle of ‘perception vs. reality’ to portray Moscow in a negative light, experts say

Prominent political pundits have offered their views on the longstanding Western campaign to promote the image of Russia as a hostile country, as

part of a panel discussion titled ‘The Empire of Evil: Has the West Successfully Demonized Russia?’

The hour-long event hosted by RT took place on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg 2024 International Economic Forum on Friday. It featured speakers such as former UN Special Commission weapons inspector Scott Ritter, and Tara Reade, a former aide to Joe Biden. Others included former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, the great nephew of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Alexander von Bismarck, and American political commentator Jackson Hinkle.

The event was moderated by RT host and correspondent Oksana Boyko.

Here are some key takeaways from the discussion.

Perception vs. reality

Western countries and media are shaping an image of Russia as ‘the enemy’, and use this to justify the allocation of resources to deter it, Scott Ritter said, calling this effort a battle of “perception vs. reality.”

He argued that the West tries to make Russia look like it is “worthy of confrontation” to justify the efforts, while trying to suppress the true image of Russia.

”Anybody who has the audacity to correct the record, to reach into Russia, to capture the Russian experience… and try to expose it to the Western audience, is deemed an enemy of the state,” he said, adding that the fact that he was prevented by the US authorities from going to Russia only proves his point.

Ignorance regarding Russia

Ritter noted that during the Cold War, US policymakers encouraged a better understanding of Russia, including its language, culture, and history, but now, all of this expertise has been squandered and neglected.

He added that the US diplomatic corps and the military are now staffed by people “trained not to learn about your enemy, but despise… and hate” them. The only real solution for Washington is to start taking knowledge of Russia seriously again, Ritter argued.

Animosity towards Russia as an artificial construct

The anti-Russia sentiment in the US “is completely manufactured by political elites,” Tara Reade said, claiming that this animosity largely stems from financial incentives. She explained that some former US officials who now work for defense corporations are beneficiaries of weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

American journalist Jackson Hinkle concurred, describing the US-Russia stand-off as “artificial,” as the US has had “no history of beef” with Russia, with Moscow supporting Washington on numerous occasions in the past. A notable example was World War II, when the Soviet Union and the US fought against Nazi Germany, Hinkle said.

”Ultimately, we don’t have any reason to hate Russia or Russians, especially today, with a younger generation of increasingly traditional and… conservative young men rising up in America.”

Deep-rooted East-West antagonism

Western countries traditionally see Russia as part of a collective East, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said, arguing that this mindset has become fertile ground for cultivating a negative view of the country.

‘Europe lost its soul’

The version of the EU that once embraced freedom of speech and the rule of law is now a distant memory, as these values have been shattered in recent years, Kneissl believes.

While the bloc may eventually manage to deal with its economic and political problems, “Europe has lost its soul,” she argued.

Hope for youth

While Alexander von Bismarck agreed that Europe has lost its soul, he argued that this is not true when it comes to young people, as they rely heavily on social media to access views that don’t portray a one-sided version of events, and use this tool for fruitful debate.

Von Bismarck claimed that 80% of Germans don’t believe in what their government says or does, despite the mainstream media’s attempts to impose their own version of reality on them.

No talk of peace at Zelensky’s ‘peace conference’ – Germany

Olaf Scholz has admitted that the high-profile summit is not aimed at ending the conflict

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is not traveling to Vladimir Zelensky’s so-called ‘peace conference’ to initiate peace talks, but to rally as many countries as possible to the Ukrainian leader’s side, he told parliament on Thursday.

In a speech focusing on security issues,Scholz told lawmakers that “there will be no peace negotiations”at the summit, which is due to take place in Switzerland next weekend. “We are still a long way from that,” Scholz continued, adding that he intends to use the conference “to engage countries around the world in order to make it clear to Moscow: We stand by international law and the Charter of the United Nations.”

Zelensky invited more than 160 delegations to the Swiss conference, with Russia not receiving an invitation. While dozens of Western leaders and diplomats will attend – including Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President Joe Biden will skip the event, with the White House announcing this week that Vice President Kamala Harris will attend in his stead.

Beijing has snubbed the gathering entirely, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry explaining on Monday that any peace conference aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict must involve the equal participation of Moscow and Kiev, and the consideration of multiple peace plans.

By skipping the conference, China has become “an instrument in the hands of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin,” Zelensky declared on Sunday.

Zelensky views his own ten-point proposal as the only acceptable path to peace with Russia. Moscow has dismissed this document – which demands a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from all territories Ukraine considers its own, for Moscow to pay reparations, and for Russian officials to face war crimes tribunals – as “detached from reality.”

“Countries don’t want to take part in an event without a goal. This is an absurd activity, just some idle way to spend time,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday. Any reluctance to attend is “absolutely understandable,” Peskov added.

Nicaragua has rejected an invitation. Managua has“never participated and will not take part in this political farce, which has no goal of finding a path to peace, but is only aimed at presenting another ultimatum to Russia,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Saudi Arabia, which hosted a similar Ukraine-themed meeting in 2023, has also reportedly declined to attend. Pakistan likewise intends to skip the event, according to local media, while India is said to be considering whether to downgrade its representation compared to the Saudi gathering last August.

Scholz’ interpretation of the summit is similar to that of Putin. Last month, the Russian president wrote off the conference as an attempt by Zelensky to “gather as many nations as possible, convince everyone that the best proposal is the terms of the Ukrainian side, and then send it to us in the form of an ultimatum.”

Germany needs to vote Scholz out this weekend, what a mess, dictator and liar.

Russia ready to arm US enemies – Medvedev

Washington’s arming of Ukraine is about to backfire, the former Russian president has warned

Moscow is prepared to arm the enemies of the US in response to Washington and its allies sending weapons to Ukraine, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

President Vladimir Putin floated the possibility of such an “asymmetric” responseat Wednesday’s meeting with foreign news agencies, but pointed out the suggestion was only under consideration.

“This is a rather significant change of our foreign policy,” Medvedev said in a post on his English-language X (formerly Twitter) account.

Until now, he said, “the Yankees and their drooling dogs” felt entitled to send all sorts of weapons to Ukraine, to destroy Russia “by any means possible,” while threatening anyone who would provide Moscow with weapons or other materials for its defense.

“Now, may the United States and its allies experience firsthand the direct use of Russian weapons by third parties,” Medvedev added. “These persons, or regions have been intentionally left unnamed, but it can be all those who consider the Yankeeland & Co their enemy, regardless of their political outlook and international recognition.”

Their enemy is the US, and that means, to us they are friends.

The US and its allies have long insisted that providing Ukraine with weapons and equipment did not make them a party to the conflict with Russia. To maintain that perception, they had announced certain restrictions on the use of their weapons by Kiev. Over the past week, however, following a British-led pressure campaign, most NATO countries have greenlit Ukraine’s strikes into what they consider Russian territory.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Putin said Russia had “no illusions” about the long-range missiles provided by the West, explaining that Ukrainian troops were merely pulling the trigger on firing solutions provided by the US and others.

Outlining Russia’s response, Putin said the first step would be boosting air defenses to destroy the incoming missiles. The second might be supplying “similar weapons to those regions of the world, where they will be used against sensitive sites of these countries.”If Western provocations continue, and they cross the threshold into direct involvement in the war, “then we reserve the right to act in a similar way,” the Russian president added.

“This is a recipe for very serious problems,” he warned.

Medvedev was Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, after which he served as prime minister until 2020. He is currently deputy chair of the Russian Security Council. He is known for maintaining a hard line on the Ukraine conflict in his social media posts, which the Kremlin has never outright disavowed.
