Dozens killed, including child, in Ukrainian strike on Russian region – governor
Kiev’s forces have targeted a village shop in Kherson, Vladimir Saldo has said
At least 22 civilians have been killed in Ukrainian shelling targeting the village of Sadovoe in Russia’s Kherson Region, Governor Vladimir Saldo said on Friday. A nine-year-old child is among the victims, he added.
Theattack hit a small shop in a residential area, Saldo said. When locals rushed to aid the victims of the first strike, a second one followed, striking the same area, he said.A total of 17 civilians were killed in the shop and near it and four more people living in the nearby houses lost their livesas well, according to the governor.
At least 15 people were also injured in the strike, Saldo said, adding that five of them are currently in “critical condition.” The shop was full of customers at the time and was destroyed, he stated, branding the attack a “bloody crime” and a “heinous murder.”
According to Saldo,Ukrainian forces first used a guided bomb to strike the shop before hitting the same area with a US-made M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS)multiple rocket launcher. Kiev’s Western backers have supplied Ukraine with dozens of such systems, which have been extensively used by its troops throughout the conflict with Russia.
Ukraine has long touted HIMARS systems as high-precision weapons used to strike high-value assets. Russian officials have said they recovered debris fromHIMARS munitions after strikes on purely civilian targetson multiple occasions.
Kiev’s troops have been actively targeting civilians in Russian regions throughout the conflict. In mid-May, one person was killed and “many” others injured in another Ukrainian attack in Kherson Region. On that occasion, Kiev’s forces struck a minibus carrying civilians with a drone.
The Russian city of Belgorod, located not far from the Ukrainian border, has become one of the main targets of Kiev’s attacks. Ukrainian forces bombarded it on New Year’s Eve, killing 25 civilians at a festive event.
The continued strikes targeting the civilian population in Russian border regions prompted Moscow to launch an offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region in an effort to create a buffer zone to curb cross-border attacks.
President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that if Ukraine continues to “shell residential areas in border territories,” then Russia “will be forced to create a security zone” to deprive it of the ability to make such strikes.

Ukrainians want US to stop corruption complaints – NBC
Ties between Washington and Kiev have reportedly deteriorated over aid delays and pressure to reduce fraud
Relations between the US and Ukrainian governments have reportedly soured, deteriorating to their lowest point since the conflict with Russia escalated in 2022,partly because of irritation over pressure from Washington to tackle rampant corruption in Kiev.
US and Ukrainian officials privately acknowledge growing friction in the relationship, NBC News reported on Thursday. Kiev’s frustration stems largely from delays in US weapons deliveries andincessant demands to ramp up anti-corruption efforts.
Questions over Ukraine’s corruption problems have led to “repeated disagreement,” current and former government officials told NBC. “Ukrainian officials are particularly irritated with the US ambassador, Bridget Brink, over the issue.”
The bilateral strains come at a time when Ukrainian forces are losing ground on the battlefield and the administration of US President Joe Biden is struggling to keep military aid flowing to Kiev. US lawmakers finally approved $61 billion in new Ukraine aid in April, after six months of delays. Biden has been reluctant to authorize increasingly provocative weapons packages for Kiev, such as long-range missiles that Ukraine could use to strike targets deeper in Russian territory.
Ukrainian leaders believe Washington’sambassador has created “unnecessary tensions” by pressing for more reforms=, despite Kiev’s progress in funding an anti-corruption court and a special prosecutor’s office, NBC said. The Biden administration has “lost sight of the overarching priority – winning on the battlefield,” sources close to the government told the media outlet.
TheUS military’s inspector general warnedlawmakers in a report last month that the conflict with Russiawas creating new opportunities for bribes, kickbacks and other corruption in Ukraine. The report noted multiple scandals involving misuse of defense resources, saying,“Endemic corruption persists” in Kiev, which has “one of the least accountable governments in Europe.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a visit to Kiev last month that the Ukrainian government must ensure that “the fight against corruption continues at home just as the fight against Russia’s aggression continues on the front lines.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba pushed back on corruption claims in a joint press briefing with Blinken: “If we were as corrupt as the perception says, they simply wouldn’t be giving us any money. They wouldn’t be opening accession talks with Ukraine to accede the European Union, and the United States wouldn’t have trust in Ukraine.” (KEK what an idiot)
The two governments also have clashed over Biden’s decision not to attend a peace summit organized by Kiev. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky publicly stated that Biden’s presence was needed at the summit and his absence would only be cheered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rather than participate in the peace conference, Biden reportedly chose to attend a fundraiser in Los Angeles featuring actor George Clooney and other Hollywood stars.

Ukrainian prisoners paying bribes to go to war – NGO
Kiev is desperate for troops, and has allowed convicts to enlist in exchange for parole
Ukrainian inmates who want to shorten their sentences by enrolling in the military are being pressured by corrupt prison staff to pay bribes first, a local NGO claims.
Kiev, which faces a serious shortfall of manpower on the front line, has introduced a system that allows some inmates to apply for military service in exchange for early release.
The relevant law was passed in May, having been championed by Justice Minister Denis Malyuska, who claimed in interviews that murderers can make good combat soldiers. However, only some violent criminals are eligible for the scheme.
In its current form, the mechanism is a hotbed for graft, Oleg Tsvily, who heads an NGO called Protection for Prisoners of Ukraine, told the news outlet Strana on Wednesday.
”Prison management considers a prisoner’s application for mobilization before handing it over to a commission. If it refuses to take the petition, the prisoner has no other way to enroll,” the activist explained.
The NGO has already received complaints that some inmates are being extorted by officials, he said.
”An inmate who has no money may be invited to pay it off as soon as he gets his first paycheck from the military. Sometimes they are told to testify against other convicts before getting a chance to mobilize.One has to be ‘useful’ to the prison staff,” Tsvily claimed.
Last week, the prisoners’ rights group published footage of a man being roughed up by guards upon arrival at a prison located in Poltava Region in central Ukraine. It came after the country’s State Investigative Bureau announced that it was probing the facility for the alleged torture of inmates in its custody.
The activist said the case was showing just a sample of the system of abuses and corruption which operates inside the national penitentiaries.
”The blackmail continues even after the person is freed:you pay or a video of your humiliation gets leaked online. The video that I published… prisoners managed to steal from the computer of an employee of the prison,” he told the news outlet.
