Fight over secret N.J. ‘baby blood stockpile’ may be headed to court after talks stall

When babies are born in New Jersey, they don’t wait long before they take their very first test.

Within 48 hours of birth, a newborn’s heel is pricked, and their blood is collected on a paper card to be tested for dozens of different disorders.

But, most parents don’t know the blood leftover on the card is kept by the state in a temperature-controlled room for 23 years. Families have no say in how their baby’s blood is used, including whether it’s sold for research or given to law enforcement.
