Because anything worth doing is worth doing well. Different people have different talents. Talents that are useful towards things worth doing create a hierarchy of competence, so that the species can benefit as a whole by having those who are best at certain jobs do those jobs.
However, once those hierarchies are in place, they can be easily infiltrated, corrupted, and trend toward tyranny. Hierarchies are a good thing, but they can be catastrophic when people are distracted, asleep, or apathetic towards keeping the hierarchies fair and geared towards the promotion of the competent to the top.
This is pretty much the reason why the founding fathers wrote that the tree of liberty must be kept fertile with the blood of patriots. We must constantly guard first against the evil in ourselves, as well as the evil in others seeking to pervert and exploit all good things we set up.
