Putin signs Moon-station deal with China

The agreement with Beijing is aimed at consolidating Russia’s leading role in space exploration, Moscow has said

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law ratifying an intergovernmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction of an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS).

The document, in which the president validates a deal first agreed by Moscow and Beijing in 2022, was published Wednesday on Russia’s official legal information portal.

The ratification law last month passed the lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, and last week was approved by the upper house, the Federation Council.

The agreement to cooperate on the Moon station “meets Russia’s interests because it will contribute to strengthening Russia’s strategic partnership with China” and will provide for “the consolidation of Russia’s leading role in the exploration of outer space, including in the exploration and use of the Moon,” an explanatory note to the law reads.

Working jointly with Beijing will also increase the efficiency of the research carried out at the ILRS, and will mitigate the potential technical and financial risks associated with exploration and use of the Moon, as well as facilitating the training of scientists and other personnel for future space projects, it added.

The ILRS is being developed by Russia’s space agency Roscosmos and China’s National Space Administration (CNSA). But, according to Moscow and Beijing, the project, which aims to“promote humanity’s exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes,” remains open to all interested countries and international partners. It has already been joined by nine other nations, including South Africa, Egypt and Pakistan.

It’s planned that the space facility will consist of a station on a lunar orbit and a moon base on the surface. It’ll be supported byseveral smart mobile rovers and a hopping robot, CNSA and Roscosmos said earlier.

According to a roadmap provided by the Russian space agency, the ILRS is expected to become operational by 2035. With the project divided in several stages, Russia and China plan to select a location for the moon base by 2025, with construction efforts to follow between 2026 and 2035.

When ready, the station will be studying lunar topography, geology, as well as the internal structure of the moon, while also supporting further space exploration in the future, including manned missions to the Moon.

A wave of demonstrations follows a defeat for Emmanuel Macron’s party in the EU Parliament election

Thousands of people have protested across France against the growing influence of the National Rally (RN), ahead of a snap election called in the wake of the right-wing party’s strong showing in the EU Parliament vote.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the early legislative election in a surprise move after the Renaissance alliance, led by his party, was trounced in Sunday’s vote by the movement associated with Marine Le Pen.

France’s largest unions – the CFDT, CGT, UNSA, FSU and Solidaires – issued its call for mass demonstrations over the weekend, and voiced alarm over the prospect of the anti-immigration, protectionist RN taking power.

The RN, led by 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, won around a third of French votes in the EU-wide ballot on 6-9 June, almost twice as many as Macron’s alliance.

If the RN wins a majority in the French legislative election – to be held in two rounds on June 30 and July 7 – PresidentMacron will have to spend the remainder of his presidency, until 2027, with an opponent as prime minister, and will effectively cede control over domestic policy.

With less than three weeks to go before the vote, about 6,200 protesters marched in Toulouse and 3,000 in Paris, while over 2,200 turned out in Marseille, according to national media.

Rallies were also held in Nantes, Rennes, Bordeaux, Lyon, Grenoble and Strasbourg, with marchers displaying anti-RN banners, as well asPalestinian flags.(Muslims are Macron's lackies and there are a lot there)

Earlier, activists published a statement calling “for people to demonstrate as widely as possible.”

“We need a democratic and social awakening. Otherwise, the far right will come to power,” the joint statement said. Unions have also called for an increase in salaries and pensions, and a reversal of unemployment insurance reforms as part of the “awakening.”

In Paris, the crowds vandalized election signs and sprayed graffiti on walls, with messages including ‘Ni Macron, ni Bardella’ (‘Neither Macron, nor Bardella’), local reporters said.

Outside France, the EU parliamentary election saw a major shift towards conservative-leaning parties.
