USS Bataan Holds Change of Command

NORFOLK, Va. – Capt. Trace Head relieved Capt. Paul Burkhart as commanding officer, USS Bataan (LHD 5) during a change of command and retirement ceremony held June 14, 2024, aboard Bataan.

Burkhart, who retired after 39 years of service, passed the title of “Captain” to Head in a traditional exchange in the ship’s hangar bay.

“I am thankful to each and every one of you here,” said Burkhart. “To the Battling Bastards of Big 5, you embody the phrase “Bataan tough,” and I couldn’t be more proud to have been your commanding officer.

A native of North Chili, New York, Captain Burkhart enlisted in the Navy in August 1984.

Four USAMU Soldiers have earned spots on Team USA and will represent the Nation at the 2024. Summer Games in Paris.

Sgt. Ivan Roe, a Manhattan, Montana native will compete in at his first Olympic Games in both the Men’s 10m Air Rifle and 50m Three-Position Rifle (or Smallbore) events.

Sgt. Sagen Maddalena, a Groveland, California native will compete in both the Women’s 10m Air Rifle and 50m Three-Position Rifle (or Smallbore) events. This will be the first Olympic Games for Maddalena in the 10m Air Rifle event, but the second in the 50m Three-Position Rifle (or Smallbore) event. She competed at the Tokyo Games, where she placed 5th in the Smallbore. Finals.

Staff Sgt. Will Hinton, a Dacula, Georgia native, will represent the Nation in Men’s Olympic Trap. This will be his first Olympics.

And Staff Sgt. Rachel Tozier, a Pattonsburg, Missouri native, will compete in Women’s Olympic Trap. This will be her first Olympics as well.

Trump endorses Julie McGuire for Lt. Governor of Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Former President Donald Trump announced his endorsement of Julie McGuire to be the next Lt. Governor of Indiana.

This comes after McGuire was endorsed by Indiana gubernatorial nominee Mike Braun, who is a strong supporter of Trump.

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Justice Department won't pursue contempt charges against Garland

The Justice Department has declined to pursue a criminal case against Attorney General Merrick Garland, just days after House Republicans voted to hold him in contempt for defying a congressional subpoena for audiotapes of President Biden.

Prosecutors said Garland enjoys a legal shield from prosecution because Biden asserted executive privilege over the tapes last month. The decision means the case is now closed.

That’s in line with how the Justice Department handled two previous episodes where Congressional majorities advanced contempt resolutions against Garland’s predecessors, Attorneys General Eric Holder and Bill Barr.

The U.S. military’s anti-vax effort began in the spring of 2020 and expanded beyond Southeast Asia before it was terminated in mid-2021, Reuters determined. The military program started under former President Donald Trump and continued months into Joe Biden’s presidency, Reuters found – even after alarmed social media executives warned the new administration that the Pentagon had been trafficking in COVID misinformation. The Biden White House issued an edict in spring 2021 banning the anti-vax effort, which also disparaged vaccines produced by other rivals, and the Pentagon initiated an internal review, Reuters found.

US Slated to Suspend Gaza Pier Operation for Fourth Time in One Month

The pier has only been operational for 10 of the 28 days since it was built.

For the fourth time in less than a month, U.S. military officials are expected to suspend aid shipments through their pier off Gaza’s coast, as the U.S. continues to allow Israel to carry out its near-total blockade of humanitarian aid and famine campaign.

U.S. forces are expected to dismantle the pier on Friday and transport it back to Israel, CNN reports, due to forecasts of heavy seas over the next days. It’s unclear how long the pier will be inoperational, and it is expected to be reconnected when conditions allow.

This marks the fourth time the pier has been rendered inoperational since it was initially connected on May 17.
