As Gen X I always thought Russia was the Enemy and didn't realize they changed and weren't Communist anymore until a few years ago. Maybe I am dumb
They were essentially Russia's Vassal states and were paying the vig up to them, they couldn't just lose them and their protection money and let the US or NATO whoever else snatch them up, i guess.
