State Air Guard Units Could Be Moved to Space Force Despite Governors' Opposition Under Senate Proposal

The Senate Armed Services Committee has included a provision in its version of a must-pass defense bill that would allow the Air Force to bypass state governors in transferring certain space-focused National Guard units into the active-duty Space Force, but with some exceptions.

The bill "requires the U.S. Air Force to transfer certain space functions of the Air National Guard to the U.S. Space Force," but adds it "shall not reduce the end strength for the affected state Air National Guard organizations." The Senate committee passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, on Thursday evening, but it still faces a long journey of negotiations with the House and votes before becoming law.

Rare creature — with ‘striking’ blue color — seen in Washington for first time in years.

Northern leopard frogs are usually brown or green, officials said. So when wildlife workers saw one with a “striking iridescent blue color,” they deemed it an “extremely rare sight.”

Plus, a blue northern leopard frog has not been seen in Washington since 2019, wildlife officials said. Sightings have also been few in the past 15 years as the frog population declines and was last known to populate the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area, officials said. Wildlife officials are working to recover the frog species.

Military Intelligence Training Center Opens at Camp Ritchie (19 JUN 1942)

MILITARY INTELLIGENCE TRAINING CENTER OPENS AT CAMP RITCHIE

On 19 June 1942, instruction began at the Military Intelligence Training Center (MITC) at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. By the time it closed in October 1945, the school had graduated approximately 19,000 military intelligence specialists, most of whom deployed overseas to support combat operations.

During World War II, general supervision of intelligence training rested with the Training Branch of the War Department’s Military Intelligence Service (MIS), the operating agency of the Army’s G-2. Unfortunately, going into the war, the War Department did not have a dedicated intelligence school. The MITC, which began operations on 19 June 1942, came closest to fulfilling the Army’s long-neglected need for a centralized intelligence school.

Alaska Air Guard crews rescue six survivors of remote plane crash

The crew responded to a call for a help from the pilot of a de Havilland Beaver, a small passenger plane popular in Alaska and commonly fitted with pontoons, or floats, to land on lakes and open water. The Beaver, with five passengers and a pilot, crashed in Lake Clark National Park, a remote mountain region about 100 miles west of Anchorage and reachable only by air.

The plane crashed near K’q’uya Vena, or Kijik Lake, a smaller body that flows into the larger, Qizhejeh Vena, or Lake Clark.

The Air Guard crew, from the 176th Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, used a signal from the Beaver’s emergency locator to home in on its location.

The crew found the Beaver in woods too dense to land, and inserted two pararescuemen to the site. The pararescuemen, who are trained as paramedics, assessed and treated two of the occupants, and found the other four were largely uninjured.
