Why the Ace of Spades is Universally Known as the "Death Card"

October 26, 2023 by Nelson Ayers

As an avid gamer and data analyst, I‘ve always been fascinated by the Ace of Spades. Dubbed the "death card" worldwide, this single playing card carries centuries of symbolism tying it to mortality, darkness, luck, and power over life and death. But why has such potent mystique coalesced around this one card? By probing the Ace of Spades‘ history, wartime significance, cultural weight, and links to tarot‘s Death card, we can understand how it gained its deadly moniker.

The Color Black: A Universal Symbol of Death

The first clue to the Ace of Spades‘ symbolism lies in its inky black color. Across cultures worldwide, the color black has long signified death, darkness, and mourning. "Black will remain synonymous with death because of its historical associations," cultural historian Dr. Marin Clarke told me. Whether the ancient Greeks draping black fabrics on tombs or Victorians using black-trimmed invitations to funerals, black contains universal mortality symbolism. This holds true for the black spades suit of playing cards. Of the 4 suits, spades alone could assume the black hue. Hearts are red, diamonds are red, and clubs are green. According to card historian Dr. Greg Matthews, this color system was fixed from the 14th century when playing cards migrated from Asia to Europe. The Ace of Spades was thus destined to bear the color most associated with death worldwide.
