A Day in the Life: How US soldiers train on missile defense systems to keep safe
LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - We’re continuing our “A Day In the Life” series with a look at how soldiers at Fort Sill train on the Patriot launching system.
“It’s really important to get the basics and the advanced tactics right here because whenever you’re down range, you don’t know when a transition war exercise or an ORE or something like that is going to happen, and that’s not the time you want to learn,” Staff Sgt. Christopher Miller said.
Soldiers using the Patriot launching system need to be able to use it at any time, according to Staff Sgt. Miller.
“You want to be proficient and be able to do it even if you’re coming out of the dead of sleep,” Miller said. “You want to be able to be proficient even if you’re not 100% conscious yet and you’re just waking up.”
He says the mobile system can search, detect and engage any enemy air traffic.
“I think the neatest part of the patriot launching system is the fact that you can engage multiple targets that are far away, moving very fast and can track all of them, engage all of them,” Miller shared. “It’s a really good deterrent.”
After telling me about the system, he then put my memory to the test and asked me to set the launcher up.
