Spain opposes NATO troops in Ukraine â defense minister
France is wrong about deploying instructors to Kiev, Margarita Robles has said
Sending NATO troops to Ukraine would represent an unacceptable escalation of the conflict with Russia, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has warned.
Robles spoke on Monday at an event for female diplomats, organized by the German ambassador to Madrid. She addressed Spainâs recent security pact with Ukraine and aid to Kiev.
âWe are living in the most dangerous situation since the Second World War,â Robles told the gathering, pointing out that ballistic missiles âknow no borders.â
Commenting on recent remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron â backed by some European NATO members â about possibly sending troops to Ukraine, Robles said Spain is âtotallyâ against it. While Madrid respects the position of Paris, âwe must be very careful not to give excusesâ to Russia for escalating the conflict, she explained.
While insisting France is ânot at war with Russia,â Macron said earlier this month that he was building a coalition with several other countries to send instructors to Ukraine, insisting this was not an escalation.
It has been NATOâs âobsessionâ from the start of the hostilities to ânot escalateâ the conflict, while supporting Ukraine, Robles said on Monday.
The US and its allies have sent Ukraine almost $120 billion worth of weapons, equipment, and ammunition over the past two years, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany, while maintaining that it does not make them a party to the conflict.
The weapons Spain has sent to Ukraine have been entirely defensive in nature, Robles said. Madrid is currently finalizing repairs on a new batch of Leopard main battle tanks, which will be sent to Kiev soon, she said. Spain is also training about 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
âWe are already [training them] in hand-to-hand combat,â Robles said, adding that âone of the things we teach them is how to make a tourniquet.â
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez signed a security pact with Vladimir Zelensky last month, promising Ukraine over âŹ1 billion ($1.08 billion) worth of military aid, plus another âŹ5 billion over the next three years. According to Spanish media, as part of the pact Madrid has pledged to deliver more Patriot air defense missiles, Leopard 2A4 tanks, and ammunition.
Russia has warned the West that its material support for Ukraine risks making them a party to the conflict, while not changing its ultimate outcome.

Deadly explosion rocks Czech military base used to train Ukrainians
An unspecified ammunition blast left one dead and eight injured on Monday, according to army officials
âWe are dealing with a serious accident in the Libava military training area, where unspecified ammunition exploded, the Defense Ministry wrote on X (formerly Twitter). âWe are trying to provide help as quickly as possible with a rescue helicopter involved.â
A spokeswoman for the ambulance service in the Olomouc region, Lucie Mikiskova, told reporters that emergency services were working at the scene.
âGiven that this is a military area, I cannot give more detailed information,â she said.
âI can only confirm that we are responding to this incident, we have two crews from Olomouc there and the air ambulance service from another region is also helping,â she added.
Four soldiers with moderate injuries have been transported by helicopter and ambulance to the University Hospital in the nearby city of Olomouc, some 200km east of the capital Prague, local media reported, citing a hospital spokesman.
Another four servicemen have been taken to the hospital and one soldier was treated at the scene, according to him. Military police spokeswoman Katerina Mlynkova told reporters that the injured soldiers âwere not foreigners.â
According to information from the website of the Libava Military District, an exercise was scheduled to take place at the facility on Monday and traffic on nearby roads had been restricted.
The Libava base has served as a training camp for Ukrainian troops since 2022, according to Czech defense officials. According to media reports, the Czech Republic has been providing the soldiers with food, accommodation, ammunition and weapons at Libava.
Czech instructors at the site have reportedly been teaching Ukrainians how to attack, communicate, and handle weapons.
Earlier this month, Defense Minister Jana Cernochova said that 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been trained in the Czech Republic last year and the same number of troops had been approved for this year.

6 arrested as 35 tonnes of cocaine seized at major European ports
Criminal network allegedly organised multi-tonne container shipments from South America to major Western European ports
Europol has supported the German Criminal Police (LKA Baden Wuttemberg) and German Customs (ZFA Stuttgart and ZOLL Karlsruhe) in dismantling a criminal organisation smuggling large quantities of cocaine in containers from South America to the EU via major ports, largely the ports of Hamburg (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). The investigation also involved law enforcement authorities from Belgium, the Netherlands, Ecuador and Columbia.
The investigation, initiated in April 2023, focused on a criminal network organising multi-tonne shipments to Europe of cocaine sourced in Ecuador and shipped from Colombia, Ecuador, Suriname, Guyana and Paraguay. Investigative leads link the group to possible additional shipments from West Africa. The criminal network operated from Germany, allegedly organising the logistics of their criminal activity through the involvement of large number of front companies, including transport companies and criminal associates such as administrative personnel and drivers. Between April and September 2023, law enforcement authorities in Belgium, Ecuador and Germany seized about 35 tonnes of cocaine linked to the activities of this criminal network.
The action days on 31 May (in Cologne) and 5 June (in Hamburg) led to:
6 arrests
24 house searches
Seizures including high-end vehicles, jewellery, cash, electronic equipment and various documents
This operation follows EU Member Statesâ and Europolâs efforts to provide a response to the most threating criminal networks active in the EU, especially the ones operating in the EUâs major ports. Such an operational response aims at bringing together EU Member States to effectively target these logistical networks with close ties to the command-and-control centres affecting the EUâs internal security. To better understand and counter the threat, Europol published a joint analysis report in partnership with the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg/Bremerhaven that looks into the risk and challenges for law enforcement posed by criminal networks in EU ports.
Europol facilitated the exchange of information and provided continuous analytical support to the investigation. Europol also contributed to the overall case coordination among various agencies. On the action day, Europol deployed two experts in the field to cross-check operational information in real time and provide experts with possible leads and technical support.

Blood Money: The Weapons Manufacturers Profiting From The Gaza Genocide
As Israel continues to wage its bloody genocide against the people of Gaza, the military-industrial complex is cashing in on the senseless slaughter.
Despite calls across college campuses demanding divestment from Israel, one sector of the Israeli economy appears to be booming. Israeli startups raised over $1 billion in funding for the second straight month in May.
A number of these successful startups have participated in Israelâs ongoing war on the besieged Gaza Strip, suggesting genocide is a lucrative marketing tool for business. Products like suicide drones, smart guns, and robot dogs have all been deployed on the battlefield since October 2023, with some startups even exploiting the war to their advantage and touting their technologiesâ use in the war as an advertising boost.
Israelâs government-owned and private companies alike have long promoted their weapons as âbattle-tested,â with the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank serving as Israelâs homegrown weapons-testing laboratory.
âItâs just one example, and there are so many more, of Israel not wanting to âwasteâ the opportunity in Gaza to show off its military hardware to an excited global market,â Antony Loewenstein, author of The Palestine Laboratory, a book on Israeli weapons exports around the world, wrote in the April 3, 2024 edition of his newsletter.
Hamasâ October 7, 2023 attack exposed Israelâs once-renowned cyber tech capabilities. Whereas such a massive oversight would presumably collapse any other industry, the opposite appears to be happening as Israelâs genocide overshadows the October attack.
âDespite this colossal failure of the intelligence agencies, the wholesale destruction of Gaza and the kinds of weapons Israelâs using will only increase the sales,â Neve Gordon, human rights and international law professor at the Queen Mary University of London, told MintPress News.
THE DARK SIDE OF INNOVATION
Israel is rapidly becoming a pariah state on the world stage, as its assault on Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians thus far and created a manufactured famine. Yet while the International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for Israeli leaders and countries pulling their ambassadors from Israel, defense industries are eyeing the same Israeli weapons that have wreaked such unfathomable destruction and death.
âThis industry is in the business of killing,â Gordon said. âSo what we find appalling, they find exciting.â
These weapons have been used to carry out egregious violations of international law, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocide, and buyers are saying, âThatâs wonderful. These things work. This is what spurs sales.â

Bidenâs WH Tranny Accused of Rape â Blamed Having a âPhallus.â
Rose Montoya, a transgender TikTok personality whom Joe Biden invited to the White House, faces accusations of sexually assaulting multiple people. Montoya, a biological male who exposed his mock breasts at a White House Pride event, allegedly abused at least five individuals over several years.
Jesse Diamond, a biologically female transman, and pornographer known online as TransMuscleBear, recounted her experience with Montoya on social media. Diamond, who was recovering from a transgender mutilation surgery at the time, posted screenshots of an email purportedly sent by Montoya. It contains an apology, stating, âI broke your trust and violated you,â and âIâm sorry I forced myself on you.â

175,000+ Weed-Linked Convictions to be Mass Pardoned.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore plans to issue a mass pardon for over 175,000 marijuana convictions on Monday. The clemency will address low-level marijuana possession charges. Additionally, Governor Moore (D-MD) emphasized the move will redress long-standing social and economic injustices disproportionately affecting minority communities in Maryland.
Criminal records can often used to deny housing, employment, and educational opportunities, which, Governor Moore argues, hampers inclusive economic growth. Mooreâs pardon is described as one of the most extensive executive actions focusing on drug-related convictions following a stateâs legalization of marijuana.
According to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), nine states and various municipalities across the U.S. have undertaken similar actions. The Maryland clemency announcement coincides with Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
While an increasing number of American states have moved to legalize marijuana use among adultsâand issue clemency for those with prior possession arrests, data has begun to indicate that the move towards legalization might have been overly hasty. In May, Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin made a surprising about-face on the nationâs approach to marijuana, declaring that the substance would be reclassified as a narcotic by the close of 2024. The move comes as the legalization of marijuana use only worsened the countryâs drug crisis.
Meanwhile, an over-decade-long experiment with decriminalizing all drugs in Portugal appears to have failed, with public opinion increasingly turning against the policy. Even in the United States, where Oregon enacted reforms similar to Portugal, the Democrat governor recently signed emergency legislation into law decriminalizing drug possession after an epidemic of overdoses and violence.
The National Pulse reported in late May that marijuana use had overtaken alcohol among Americansâdriven by the drugâs increasingly legal status. However, the shift in usage has raised increasing concerns about addiction and marijuanaâs mental health impacts.

Chinese âCyber Policeâ Agent Runs Online Network Helping Illegal Immigrants Flood Into US
A private social network run by a self-identified Chinese government agent provides illegal immigrants with resources to get into the U.S. and evade border authorities, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation discovered.
The American Self-Guided Tour Channel is a Chinese-language group with over 8,000 members on the encrypted instant messaging platform Telegram that serves as both a forum for discussing Chinese illegal immigration and a hub for documents detailing specific routes to the U.S., a DCNF review of the channel found.
Documents in the Telegram channel translated by the DCNF identify U.S. border wall gaps, instruct Chinese nationals on how to answer questions from Border Patrol agents and provide scripts for requesting asylum.
Furthermore, the channel is overseen by an individual who spreads Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda, bans accounts who fail to toe the Party line and identifies himself as a Chinese police officer.
âWeâre allowing an element that is completely beyond our law to be established firmly as a beachhead in the United States of America, and the people of America are going to pay a severe price, much worse than we are paying even now,â North Carolina Republican Rep. Dan Bishop said after learning about the findings of the DCNFâs investigation.
Customs and Border Protection data shows that the overwhelming majority of the roughly 48,000 Chinese illegal immigrants encountered by U.S. authorities in 2024 have been single adults â and experts warn that âmilitary-aged malesâ make up the lionâs share.
Bishop described the 1,100% spike in Chinese illegal immigrants since fiscal year 2022 as âhistorically unprecedented,â and told the DCNF that the inner workings of Chinaâs human smuggling networks have largely remained a mystery to lawmakers up until now.
âEven people, like me, whoâve seen a lot of it have not yet totally come to grips with the sort of depth that youâve described,â said Bishop, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committeeâs Oversight, Investigations and Accountability subcommittee.

Connecticut Bar Association Issues Warning To Lawyers Who Speak Out Against Trumpâs Prosecution
âWords matter. Reckless words attacking the integrity of our judicial system matter even more,â the statement reads. âIn the wake of the recent trial and conviction of former President Donald Trump, public officials have issued statements claiming that the trial was a âsham,â a âhoax,â and âriggedâ; our justice system is âcorrupt and riggedâ; the judge was âcorruptâ and âhighly unethicalâ; and, that the jury was âpartisanâ and âprecooked.â Others claimed the trial was âAmericaâs first communist show trialââa reference to historic purges of high-ranking communist officials that were used to eliminate political threats.â
The CBA leadership acknowledged that âfree speech includes criticism.â The statement, however, claimed that âheadlinesâ grabbing, baseless allegationsâ made by public officials against Trumpâs prosecution âhave no place in the public discourse.â

Supreme Court Rules 5-4 Against Illegal Aliens Contesting Their U.S. Deportations
The Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling against three illegal aliens challenging their deportation orders in the United States. They argued they were not properly notified of their removal hearings in federal immigration court.
When Esmelis Campos-Chaves, Varinder Singh, and Raul Daniel Mendez-ColĂn did not appear before federal immigration judges, they were ordered deported in absentia. In each instance, the Department of Justice (DOJ) initially sent Notices to Appear (NTA) for immigration court that did not specify the hearingâs time and location.

Elite Scientists Link Sudden Cardiac Deaths to mRNA Shots
An elite team of Japanese scientists has just uncovered a smoking gun after conducting a major study on the autopsies of people who have recently suffered sudden cardiac deaths.
The trio of heavy-hitting physician-scientists running the Shiga University of Medical Science, Department of Legal Medicine in Japan found that Covid mRNA shots were responsible for the deaths of those they examined.
The scientists, led by Associate Professor Mami Nakamura, MD, PhD, analyzed the deaths of 1,513 people who had died after the first or second SARS-CoV-2 vaccination program from February 2021 to February 2022.
The team of researchers, which also includes Dr. Marin Takaso, MD, PhD and Professor Masahito Hitosugi, MD, PhD, published their explosive findings in the peer-reviewed Journal of Japanese Society of Occupational and Disaster Medicine Vol. 71 No. 6.
The scientists warn that their findings show that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) failed to adequately explain the causal relationship between these deaths and vaccination, thus âleading to vaccine hesitancy and distrust of the ministry.â
The Japanese team analyzed deaths between May 21 to March 2022 and found that cardiac deaths spiked after people received Pfizerâs mRNA injection.
âA comparison of the deaths reported in association with the different vaccines reveals the rate of death reported after the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is orders of magnitude higher,â they note in the studyâs paper.
The authors raise multiple points, including that the lack of detailed analyses by the Japanese MHLF leads to fear, uncertainty doubt, and vaccine hesitancy.
They report this because it appears to show that governments are covering up deaths that may be linked to the vaccines.
However, these highly respected medical professionals demonstrate a high likelihood of direct mRNA vaccine-induced cardiac-related deaths.
Published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Japanese Society of Occupational and Disaster Medicine Vol. 71 No. 6, the trio of respected medical researchers reports on the autopsy results for 15 deaths occurring within one week after receiving the first or second SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in Shiga Prefecture, situated to the east of Kyoto, on the island of Honshu.
The Prefecture has a population of 1.4 million.
Reporting that eleven cases were vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2/Comirnaty) and three with the Moderna (mRNA-1273/Spikevax) product, the authors note that one case numberâs vaccine brand is not known.

Illegal immigrant police could soon fill beleaguered ranks of blue city
The Seattle Police Department has lost over 700 officers in 5 years
The city of Seattle is looking to fill the depleted ranks of its police department with migrants who as children entered the country illegally.
"The Seattle Police Department is now accepting applications from DACA recipients," reads a post last week on the Seattle Police Department's LinkedIn page.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, oftentimes known as "Dreamers," are migrants who entered the country illegally as minors and have since taken advantage of the DACA policy, an Obama-era program that allows qualifying migrants the ability to defer action on deportation and gain work authorization in the United States.

In a Single Hour, Israeli Snipers Killed Seven Bystanders at the Jenin Refugee Camp
Jenin has endured plenty of rough days lately, but May 21 outdid them all. What happened?
Mounds of rubble in the Jenin refugee camp; once again mounds of rubble in the Jenin camp. A putrid stench rising from sewage flowing in the streets, dirt paths, streets reduced to pits and heaps of stones. The refugee camp was rehabilitated amazingly with a donation from the United Arab Emirates in 2002 following the Israel Defense Forces' incursion that spring. But now there isn't a street that hasn't been razed by IDF bulldozers, not a public square that hasn't been reduced to rubble, along with many stores that have been destroyed.
The IDF has raided the camp and the city in which the camp is situated multiple times recently; every incursion leaves behind dozens more killed or wounded. It looks as though the soldiers would rather be in the Gaza Strip and are compensating themselves by behaving in Jenin as though that's where they were. In "Little Gaza," as the Jenin refugee camp is known these days, the images speak for themselves. Two armed militants on a moped pass us in the wrecked alleyway, despair hangs palpably in the air.
Jenin has endured plenty of rough days lately, but May 21 outdid them all. In the course of one hour in the morning, snipers killed seven of the city's residents, all of them innocent passersby, even though the streets were quiet and the soldiers had no cause to open fire. They shot from high up in two buildings, called Rabia and A-Rein, just outside the camp, and the dead included two teenagers and the director of the surgical ward at the Jenin Governmental Hospital, who was just getting out of his car in the hospital's parking lot.
And if that bloodbath wasn't enough, just hours later, at dusk, soldiers burst into the Jenin home of Wafa, a 51-year-old social activist who had never been arrested before, ransacked the house and took her with them when they left. She remained in their jeep, bound, for about four hours. Then, as the vehicle started to move out toward their base, it exploded (apparently after a device was thrown at it), leaving the woman seriously wounded; both legs were subsequently amputated above the knee. She is hospitalized in serious condition in Jenin's Ibn Sina Hospital, ventilated and barely responsive.

Netanyahu Dissolves War Cabinet, Consolidates Power
The Prime Minister plans to make future decisions about the war in Gaza with a small consultation group
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved the Israeli war cabinet after two of its six members left. The Israeli leader will form a small consultation body of the remaining four members to make decisions about the war in Gaza.
On Monday, Netanyahu disbanded the war cabinet after Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot resigned from the body. The war cabinet was set up as a unity coalition in response to the October 7 attack to advise the Israeli leader on decisions about the war in Gaza.
However, Gantz and Netanyahu disagreed on potentially negotiating with Hamas to get the remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza released. After Netanyahu effectively killed a ceasefire agreement that would see the release of the Israelis, Gantz and Eisenkot left the war cabinet.
Other Israeli ministers initially sought to fill those seats. To prevent this, Netanyahu dissolved the body and designated a small forum of the remaining war cabinet members to make decisions about the war in Gaza. The new group includes Netanyahu himself, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Shas leader Aryeh Deri, and National Security Advisor head Tzachi Hanegbi.
Dermer and Deri are reported to be confidants of Netanyahu.
A source speaking with Haaretz said Netanyahu wanted to consolidate power and prevent far-right ministers from filling the seats. âIn practice, there is no substantial change in the decision-making process, but Netanyahuâs announcement to dissolve the war cabinet allows [National Security Minister] Itamar Ben-Gvir to step back and not insist on being part of the limited decision-making forum,â the source said.
While Netanyahu may want to exclude Ben-Gvir from decision-making, the two agree on many issues about the war. After the Israeli military announced it would pause fighting along one road in Gaza to allow aid trucks to enter the Strip, both Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir rebuked the IDF for the policy.

Israeli arms sales break record for 3rd year in row, reaching $13 billion in 2023
Defense Ministry says massive exports come as industries remain committed to Israeli war effort; air defense systems account for more than a third of sales
Annual Israeli arms sales reached a new record in 2023, for the third consecutive year, amounting to nearly double the value of exports compared to five years ago, according to Defense Ministry figures released Monday.
The ministryâs International Defense Cooperation Directorate, known as SIBAT, said defense exports totaled $13 billion last year, up from $12.5 billion in 2022 â the previous record high. Between 2018 and 2020, that number hovered between $7.5 billion and $8.5 billion.
With the outbreak of the war on October 7, the Defense Ministry said it began operating in an âemergency mode,â with defense contractors being drafted to the war effort by manufacturing weaponry and equipment for the Israel Defense Forces around the clock, alongside previous orders for foreign clients.
âDespite the war, 2023 amounted to a new record and was characterized by significant export deals,â the ministry said.
Air defense systems made up the largest chunk of exports at 36% â up from 19% in 2022. This was largely due to Israelâs âŹ4 billion sale of the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile system to Germany.

IDF knew of Hamas's plan to kidnap 250 before October 7 attack - report
The IDF had precise information about Hamas's intentions, but due to prevailing conceptions in the security establishment and possible negligence by officials, the warning signs were not acted on.
A newly surfaced document has revealed that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and intelligence systems had detailed knowledge of Hamas's plan to raid Israel and kidnap 250 people weeks before the October 7 massacre.
The document, which was compiled in the Gaza Division, outlined Hamas's intentions and was known to top intelligence officials, according to a report by Kan News.
The document, titled "Detailed End-to-End Raid Training," was distributed on September 19, 2023, and described in detail the series of exercises conducted by Hamas's elite units.
These exercises included raiding military posts and kibbutzim (collective communities in Israel), kidnapping soldiers and civilians, and maintaining the hostages once they were in the Gaza Strip.
The report by Kan News stated, "Security sources told Kan News that the document was known to the intelligence leadership, at the very least in the Gaza Division."
The document's revelations came in the wake of widespread criticism over the failure to anticipate and prevent the October 7 attack, which resulted in significant casualties and hostages.
Warning signs were not acted upon

WaPo: Pentagon Ramping Up Intelligence-Sharing With Israel
Washington has reportedly scrambled to meet Tel Avivâs âinsatiableâ demand for intelligence since October 7.
US intelligence agencies have significantly stepped up coordination with Israel throughout the war in Gaza, several officials told the Washington Post. While the intel is not supposed to be used for military purposes, some US officials fear it is helping to direct Israeli airstrikes.
Following eight months of fighting in the besieged Gaza Strip, Washington is now supplying an âextraordinary amountâ of intelligence to Tel Aviv, including âdrone footage, satellite imagery, communications intercepts and data analysis using advanced software, some of it powered by artificial intelligence,â the Post reported on Friday.
Highlighting the shift, the US deployed additional intelligence personnel to Israel soon after Hamasâ October 7 attack, sending forces from the Pentagonâs Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to work alongside CIA officers in the country. The Defense Intelligence Agency has also met with local counterparts âon a daily basisâ in recent months, one US official said.
Despite US vows to keep troops out of Gaza, JSOC special operators reportedly planned for a mission to rescue American hostages last October, though it was never ordered.
âIf we managed to unilaterally get information that we could act on, and we thought we could actually get US people out alive, we could act,â one official told the Post, adding âthere was genuinely very little information specifically about US hostages.â
While the Joe Biden administration has attempted to restrict the intel for âhostage-location effortsâ and hunting Hamasâ top leadership, it has no effective way to ensure it is not used to plan military action. Officials and lawmakers said they feared US-supplied intelligence was âmaking its way into the repositories of data that Israeli military forces use to conduct airstrikes or other military operations.â Tel Aviv has repeatedly ignored US warnings about its conduct in Gaza, where some 37,000 Palestinians have been killed since last October.
Rep. Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, has been critical of the lack of supervision on intelligence-sharing with Israel. Calling for more ârobust oversight,â he recently co-sponsored a bill that would require top officials to notify lawmakers if US intel was used for an operation that resulted in civilian deaths. The legislation is still making its way through the House.

How the IRS went soft on billionaires and corporate tax cheats
Newly obtained data shows the IRS division that audits corporations and the ultrarich flagged no more than 22 possible tax crimes over the past five years â roughly 40 times fewer criminal referrals than from the unit covering small businesses.
Michael Welu worked at the IRS for decades as a specialist in helping agents identify and investigate possible tax crimes. In an agency known for offices working in their own silos, Welu had the rare ability to move between divisions, dissecting and learning each officeâs particular customs and procedures. But that experience had its own consequence for Welu: Seeing disparities in how the separate divisions treated different tiers of taxpayers left him exasperated and helped drive him into early retirement.
For more than 30 years, Welu watched the agency struggle with budget cuts and dwindling staff. What troubled Welu, he says, went deeper than just resource constraints.
During his time at the IRS, he says, upper management in the division tasked with auditing large corporations and ultrawealthy people â the Large Business and International Division â was quick to dismiss any suggestion that a powerful taxpayer may have committed a crime, and commonly discouraged frontline agents from pursuing big cases. This stood in deep contrast to the office that policed small businesses and self-employed people, which was empowered to â as Welu saw it â take an appropriately firm stance toward taxpayers breaking the law, even if they were dealing with far smaller dollar amounts.
âI was putting butchers, bakers and candlestick makers in jail, but the big stuff we really wanted to go after was being ignored,â Welu told the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. âIt could be the most egregious, ridiculous scheme and they were just not interested.â
In 2022, Congress approved a Biden administration proposal to give the IRS $80 billion to improve customer service and strengthen its efforts to enforce tax law on wealthy individuals and large corporations. President Joe Biden has repeatedly pledged that under his administration the IRS will use its new money to target illegal tax schemes by these high-end taxpayers, who are believed to do an outsize portion of tax cheating.
ICIJ found that the agency will need more than new funding to fulfill the presidentâs promise. The IRSâs Large Business and International Division, or LB&I, takes a comparatively light approach toward the countryâs most powerful taxpayers, according to a review of records and interviews with current and former agents. In the agencyâs own comments to ICIJ, the IRS suggested that large corporations break the law less often than other types of businesses. ICIJ found that the agency treats these powerful taxpayers accordingly.
New data obtained by ICIJ shows that over the past five years, LB&I flagged no more than 22 instances of possible tax crimes for the agencyâs criminal investigators to review further â out of trillions of dollars in annual income from large corporations and ultrawealthy people that the office oversees. During the same five years, the IRS office that covers small businesses and self-employed people flagged roughly 40 times more possible crimes, sending criminal investigators 848 referrals. This office is larger than LB&I and deals with easier cases, but many of the individuals and businesses it audits deal in dollar amounts too small to be considered for a criminal referral.
The IRSâs civil divisions, which make up the vast majority of the agencyâs workforce, are supposed to flag egregious tax cheating cases for potential prosecution from the volumes of returns they process and audit. The comparatively small number of referrals from LB&I has frustrated officials within the Criminal Investigation Division, who say theyâre often unsupported in identifying cases involving the biggest taxpayers.
I was putting butchers, bakers and candlestick makers in jail, but the big stuff we really wanted to go after was being ignored.
â former IRS agent Michael Welu
In response to questions from ICIJ, the IRS said that comparing criminal referrals between divisions is misleading, adding that LB&I conducts âthe most complex audit situations the IRS faces, and there are unique circumstances around each examination.â

Attorney General Garland Targets âConspiracy Theoriesâ After Launching âElection Threats Task Forceâ with FBI, Sparking Censorship Concerns
Some might see US Attorney General Merrick Garland getting quite involved in campaigning ahead of the November election â albeit indirectly so, as a public servant whose primary concern is supposedly how to keep Department of Justice (DoJ) staff âsafe.â
And, in the process, he brings up âconspiracy theoristsâ branding them as undermining the judicial process in the US â because they dare question the validity of a particular judicial process that aimed at former President Trump.
In an opinion piece published by the Washington Post, Garland used one instance that saw a man convicted for threatening a local FBI office to draw blanket and dramatic conclusions that DoJ staff have never operated in a more dangerous environment, where âthreats of violence have become routine.â
It all circles back to the election, and Garland makes little effort to present himself as neutral. Other than âconspiracy theories,â his definition of a threat are calls to defund the department that was responsible for going after the former president.
Ironically, while the tone of his op-ed and the topics and examples he chooses to demonstrate his own bias, Garland goes after those who claim that DoJ is politicized with the goal of influencing the election.
The attorney general goes on to quote âmedia reportsâ â he doesnât say which, but one can assume those following the same political line â which are essentially (not his words) hyping up their audiences to expect more âthreats.â
âMedia reports indicate there is an ongoing effort to ramp up these attacks against the Justice Department, its work and its employees,â is how Garland put it.
And he pledged that, âwe will not be intimidatedâ by these by-and-large nebulous âthreats,â with the rhetoric at that point in the article ramped up to refer to this as, âattacks.â
Garlandâs opinion piece is not the only attempt by the DoJ to absolve itself of accusations of acting in a partisan way, instead of serving the interests of the public as a whole.
Thus, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte wrote to House Republicans, specifically House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, to accuse him of making âcompletely baselessâ accusations against DoJ for orchestrating the New York trial of Donald Trump.
While, as it were, protesting too much, (CNBC called it âthe fiery replyâ) â Uriarte also went for the âconspiracy theory conspiracy theoryâ:
âThe conspiracy theory that the recent jury verdict in New York state court was somehow controlled by the Department is not only false, it is irresponsible,â he wrote.
Garland and FBI Director Chris Wray recently discussed plans to counter election threats during a DoJ Election Threats Task Force meeting. Critics, suspicious of the timing with the upcoming election, cite the recent disbandment of the DHS Intelligence Experts Group.

Investigative journalist Ben Swann has compiled substantial evidence demonstrating that the Israeli government was aware well in advance that Hamas was planning the October 7th attacks.
Israel knew when and where it was going to happen. Not only did Egypt warn Israel and the IDF had collected their own intelligence, but Hamas was staging obvious military exercises leading up to the fateful date. The dance party near the Palestinian border wall was authorized despite the initial rejection of the event it due to safety concerns. Dore said that the point of the attack was to gain public support for invading Gaza.

"Upcoming Report Will Expose Horrors" Of Biden's Lost 85,000 Migrant Children In America
One of Muckraker.com's journalists has taken to X, revealing an upcoming report set to expose the shocking reality behind some of the 85,000 migrant children who vanished under the Biden administration's first term.
Muckraker wrote on X that one government insider has supplied them with a "list of addresses where some of the 85,000 missing alien children have been delivered under the Biden administration."
In the video, a Muckraker journalist stood outside an abandoned Amityville, New York house. He said this is one of the thousands of addresses the government insider has provided them, adding this home with boarded-up windows allegedly had two migrant children delivered to a sponsor living at the house.
"Our upcoming report will expose the horrors of the Biden administration's unaccompanied children program," Muckraker wrote on X.

"Don't Buy Into This Crap", Catherine Austin Fitts Warns "AI Is Digital Control"
Itâs all in a new report called âThe AI Revolution: The Final Coup dâEtat.â CAF explains, âThis is a very serious look at Artificial Intelligence and how itâs going to be used to implement controlâŚ"
"This past week, there was this huge open board meeting at OpenAI. There were board members put there to make sure OpenAI and its products were in alignment with the best interests of the human race. Some of them got booted out. Now, we see the former head of the NSA (National Security Agency) get put on the board.
I just realized it today, and I had not realized it before.
Edward Snowden just tweeted out and said you should never use any of these products, which include ChatGPT. Snowden also said, âYou have to understand where this is going. You have been warned.â
