Hunter Biden files appeal in Delaware gun case, but rescinds it moments later

Hunter Biden’s attorneys filed an appeal of his federal gun crimes conviction on Monday, only to inexplicably withdraw it moments after it was uploaded to the public docket.

“The motion for a new trial has been deleted at the request of counsel,” a note on the docket for the U.S. District of Delaware’s website read. It described a note as a “correcting entry.”

Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, did not respond to a request for comment.

Merck Wins US Approval for Pneumonia Vaccine to Rival Pfizer’s

Merck & Co. won US approval for a pneumococcal vaccine that threatens to unseat one of Pfizer Inc.’s biggest franchises.

Called Capvaxive, Merck’s vaccine is approved to prevent the bacterial infections behind pneumonia and meningitis for adults over 18, Merck said Monday.

Capvaxive has the potential to become the preferred vaccine given studies have shown it protects against bacterial strains that cause around 80% of pneumococcal diseases. Pfizer’s Prevnar works against 50%, to compare. Both products are indicated for people who have not previously received a pneumococcal vaccine.

DHS blames budget after releasing hundreds of unauthorized travelers from U.S. airport

Homeland Security let dozens of illegal immigrants walk free from an airport because it didn’t have the space to hold them until their departing flights, and nearly half of them disappeared, never returning for their scheduled departures, an inspector general said Monday.

From 2021 to 2023, Customs and Border Protection released at least 383 “inadmissible travelers” from its custody because officials didn’t have overnight detention space to hold them. Of those, 168 never returned for their outbound flights, the inspector general said.

Worse yet, CBP never issued immigration summonses to dozens of the travelers because the agency “did not have an effective process to track” those who failed to come back to the airport.

The travelers were coming to the U.S. but were deemed inadmissible when they were screened on arrival. Under those conditions, they are supposed to be put on a plane back.

CBP can either hold them at the airport for up to 72 hours for a return flight, or can ship them to ICE for a hold, or can send them to another airport that has an available flight. Or in some cases, the traveler can be released.

53% of Hispanics Say Deport Illegals

The CBS/YouGov poll of 1,615 registered voters conducted June 5-7 found that 62%, including 53% of Hispanics, favored a federal program to deport illegal immigrants living in the U.S. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points.

Surprisingly, 38% of Democrats supported such a measure, as well as 58% of women and 47% of Black voters.

The only demographic opposed to the identification measure were Democrats at 55% and liberals at 66%. But 57% of Hispanic voters favored the identification measure and 50% favored establishing large detention centers.

Secret Service agent held up at gunpoint following Biden's California visit: police

The perpetrator snatched a bag from the unidentified agent around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the Tustin Police Department said.

An armed stickup artist managed to slip away after robbing an off-duty U.S. Secret Service agent over the weekend.

The agent reportedly drew his personal weapon and fired it, but the suspect was not located. It wasn't immediately clear if the shooting caused injury.

The suspect fled in a 2004-2006 silver Infiniti FX35 or similar car, police said.

Maryland Sheriff Blames Biden Border Policies for Local Mother’s Murder

The Biden administration’s open-border policies allowed an illegal alien to rape and kill Maryland resident Rachel Morin, a mother of five, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler told The Daily Signal.

“The vast majority of people who are trying to get into this country, or who are flowing into this country, are not criminals but good people with serious issues wanting to make their life better,” Gahler said in a phone interview Monday with The Daily Signal,“but because we don’t have secure borders, we’re mixing them with people like these criminals.”

Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal alien from El Salvador, was arrested Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and charged with first-degree rape and murder in Morin’s death, as The Daily Signal reported earlier Monday.

This is the second time in two years that a Harford County woman has been killed by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Gahler said. The sheriff said the women’s violent deaths were preventable.

Netanyahu dissolves influential War Cabinet after key partner bolted from government

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved the influential war Cabinet that oversaw the fighting in Gaza, a government spokesperson said Monday, days after a key member of the body bolted from the government over frustration with the Israeli leader's handling of the war.

The move was widely expected following the departure of Benny Gantz, a centrist former military chief. Gantz's absence from the government increases Netanyahu's dependence on his ultra-nationalist allies, who oppose a cease-fire.

That could pose an additional challenge to the already fragile negotiations to end the eight-month war in Gaza.

The War Cabinet was formed in the early days of the war, when Gantz, then an opposition party leader and Netanyahu rival, joined the coalition in a show of unity after Hamas militants’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. He demanded that a small decision-making body steer the war, in a bid to sideline far-right members of Netanyahu’s government. It was made up of three members — Gantz, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
