You're not alone. Index and scroll is my way, too.
I've occasionally used the catalog to find new bread when no link is provided, but index serves the same purpose. And like you said, quicker.
From index, I scroll to the newest bread and usually just click one of the posts' numbers (like yours above) as if to reply and that takes me right into the bread.
I hope that makes sense. It's my day off.
Then I just kill the reply box, unless I have something to say.
