French PM warns election result could undermine support for Ukraine

Gabriel Attal has claimed that the right-wing National Rally could make sweeping changes to the country’s foreign policy

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has warned that the right-wing National Rally party, a favourite in upcoming parliamentary elections, could make “very serious changes” to the country’s position on both domestic and international issues if it comes to power. (Freakout in France! What are they hiding?)

President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the French government and announced a snap election earlier this month following his party’s defeat in the European Parliament elections. France is set to go to the polls to choose a new National Assembly on June 30, with a second round scheduled for July 7.

Speaking on the BFM TV channel on Thursday, Attal expressed particular concern that victory for right-wing parties in the upcoming vote could lead to a potential “Frexit,” referring to Britain’s exit from the EU in 2020, and result in the”cessation of a significant part of assistance to Ukraine.” This, according to the prime minister, could increase the “risk of submission to Russia.” (They love to make up bullshit)

Similar concerns have also been expressed by several other EU governments, according to a recent Bloomberg report. A number of European nations reportedly believe thatMacron’s defeat could weaken France’s role as one of Kiev’s main backers, and could also affect plans to send military instructors to Ukraine. (So Macron was doing it in the back.)

Gilles Ivaldi, a political scientist at Sciences Po university, told the outlet that a National Rally prime minister would have a “totally antagonistic” position to Macron, whose presidency continues until 2027. This would affect issues such as Russia, Ukraine, European defense, and climate change, and would lead to a “weakening of Europe.”

However, National Rally Chairman Jordan Bardella has stated that, if he comes to power, he would continue to provide ammunition to Ukraine, but would not send any French military personnel to the conflict zone nor supply Kiev with long-range missiles.

“My position has not changed. It is to support Ukraine by providing equipment, ammunition, operational logistics support, and defense weapons so that Ukraine can defend itself,” Bardella said.

Meanwhile, Moscow has repeatedly condemned the West’s continued military aid to Kiev, and has warned against sending any NATO troops to the country, insisting that such a move would constitute the West’s direct involvement in the conflict, and that they would become legitimate targets for the Russian military.

(Macron wing afraid the new PM and others will find out what France was actually doing with Zelensky and Ukraine. Both him and Scholz are responsible for this protracted war, and money laundering for sure, there’s only one reason for other countries being involved: MONEY)

Russia could arm North Korea – Putin

Moscow’s move would mirror the West’s arming of Kiev, the Russian president has said

Since the West claims it has the right to arm Ukraine with impunity, Russia reserves the same right and might send long-range precision weapons to the DPRK and other countries, President Vladimir Putin has said.

Putin spoke with reporters in Hanoi following his meetings with the leadership of Vietnam on Thursday. One of the questions related to his previous suggestion that Moscow could send missiles to the adversaries of the West, in response to the US and its allies greenlighting Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia.

”We do not rule out supplying weapons to other countries, including the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Putin said. “Let the West think where they might end up.”

Western countries that have supplied long-range and other weapons to Ukraine have said they can’t be held responsible for how Kiev uses them, and insist that it does not make them parties to the conflict, Putin elaborated, adding that Russia therefore reserves the same right for itselfPutin outlines Russian response to long-range strikes

The Russian president also noted that Moscow is considering modifications to its doctrine on the use of atomic weapons, as the West appears to be working on low-yield weapons to lower the nuclear threshold.

“We don’t need a first strike,” he said in response to another question. “Because our return strike is guaranteed to destroy any attacker.”

When asked about the peace terms he offered Ukraine last week, Putin said that Russia has always been willing to negotiate, while Kiev and its Western backers sabotaged both the Minsk process and the Istanbul talks. However, the terms he outlined will not be valid forever, Putin cautioned.

”Our terms will change depending on the situation on the ground,”the Russian president said. (meaning the more territory they take, the less they will give back)

Putin arrived in Hanoi on Wednesday evening from Pyongyang, where he signed a strategic partnership treaty with DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. His trip to Vietnam has involved the strengthening of bilateral ties with Hanoi, including trade and nuclear energy cooperation.

Press freedom ‘shrinking’ in Ukraine – Reporters Without Borders

The non-profit group has cited surveillance and threats of forceful enlistment into the military faced by independent journalists

Independent media outlets are being subjected to growing pressure in Ukraine, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has warned. The non-profit group urged the government in Kiev to combat impunity for violent crimes against reporters and to end arbitrary restrictions regarding coverage of the conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky signed a law in 2022 that significantly expanded the government’s media regulation powers, allowing for outlets to be temporarily banned. The legislation came under fire both domestically and in the West at the time.

On Wednesday, RSF released a report titled ‘Shrinking press freedom in Ukraine: urgent need to implement a roadmap for the right to information’, which claimed that “political pressure and obstacles are mounting on the Ukrainian media.”

“Since the beginning of 2024, at least five journalists have been under surveillance or threatened because of publications on corruption,”the group estimated. The document details in particular how the threat of forcible enlistment into the Ukrainian armed forces has been used to silence reporters.

Moreover, it accused Ukrainian authorities of directly interfering in the work of some media outlets. RSF cited the case of Ukrinform, which had a military representative installed at its helm last month. Around the same time, the existence of ‘stop lists’ of guests banned from being invited on air by the same media outlet was revealed, the report wrote.

RSF went on to denounce a decree passed earlier this month that obliged journalists to submit any quotes and interviews with military personnel to a special center for strategic military communications for clearing.

“The pressure, threats and interference must stop… the Ukrainian media landscape remains fragile,”Jeanne Cavelier, head of RSF’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk, emphasized.

Citing Ukrainian journalists and monitoring groups, the New York Times reported on Tuesday that the government inKiev has increasingly been curtailing press freedoms, in a manner that cannot be justified by wartime security needs.

According to the article, the authorities in Kiev are trying to ensure that the opposition, especially the party of former presidentPetro Poroshenko, does not receive positive coverage in the press, and that the government and the military are never criticized.

The newspaper claimed that the Ukrainian government has also had “tense relationships” with Western media throughout the conflict, temporarily revoking military press passes for journalists from several outlets, following reports criticizing the military.

Gaza aid pier could be dismantled – NYT

The US-built temporary floating dock could be taken apart early in July after being mostly inoperative, according to the newspaper

The floating pier built by the US to bring more humanitarian aid into Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war could be dismantled earlier than planned, the New York Times has reported, citing aid organizations.

According to the newspaper, the $230 million structure could be taken down in early July. The administration of US President Joe Biden initially predicted that it would be September before surging seas would make the pier inoperable.

The floating dock has only been in service for about ten days in totalsince it was inaugurated in mid-May due to weather damage, stormy seas, and security concerns. Aid organizations say the project has largely failed in its mission.

The pier “is not working, at least not for Palestinians,” Stephen Semler, co-founder of the Security Policy Reform Institute, wrote in an essay cited by the outlet. Semler reportedly argued that the pier had succeeded only in providing “humanitarian cover” for the Biden administration’s policy of supporting Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.

Aid started arriving into Gaza via the pier on May 17, with the US saying it had transported 137 trucks of aid to warehouses before it was announced on May 28 that operations on the floating dock were suspended for repairs.

US officials had repeatedly stated that the pier was never meant to be more than a stopgap measure and was just an additional way to help get more aid into Gaza amid the war.

Distribution of food to the Palestinian enclave via the sea route was suspended again last Friday when the US military said it would temporarily move the pier to keep it from being damaged by high seas. “The safety of our service members is a top priority and temporarily relocating the pier will prevent structural damage caused by the heightened sea state,” the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a social media post. About 1,000 US service members operate the pier.

The UN World Food Program, which works with the US to bring aid from the pier to warehouses in Gaza, suspended cooperation earlier this month for a “security review” amid concerns for its staff and allegations that the pier could have been used by the IDF during the Nuseirat hostage rescue operation early this month, which killed 270 Palestinians. The Pentagon quickly denied that the aid pier was used in the operation.

The UN has insisted that aid deliveries by land are the “most viable, effective, and efficient” way to combat the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million people. At least 500 trucks a day are needed to enter Gaza, it said.
