Homeland Security reported roughly 241,000 encounters with unauthorized migrants in May, continuing this year’s trend of somewhat lower illegal immigration.
Nearly half of those encounters came at land crossings, airports and seaports, signaling the shift in illegal immigration as migrants move away from sneaking in across the southern border and instead take advantage of President Biden’s so-called “legal pathways” for otherwise unauthorized migrants to get into the country.
After recording the worst month on record in December, the border has been less chaotic in 2024.
Agents at the southern border reported less than 118,000 arrests, down from nearly 250,000 in December.
But officers at the southern ports of entry set a new record with nearly 53,000 unauthorized migrants encountered.
The reasons for the improvement are heatedly debated.
Some analysts credit Mexico, which stepped up its enforcement of its own borders in late December.
