Buckingham Fountain closed ‘until further notice’ after pool water dyed red

Buckingham Fountain is “closed until further notice” for repairs “due to overnight vandalism” after the Grant Park tourist attraction’s pool water was dyed red overnight, the Chicago Park District announced Saturday.

“Damage was discovered in and around” the fountain overnight, police said. No further details were given on the extent of the damage.

Crews were working at the fountain Saturday to fix the damage. Visitors could still access the area near the fountain Saturday afternoon, but the jets were turned off.

A park district worker on site Saturday morning, who declined to give his name, told the Sun-Times there was graffiti on the ground near the fountain that said “Free Palestine,” “Gaza is bleeding” and “Stop the genocide.”
