Rancherfag here.
Investigated Hammond's a lot at that of the stand offs.
There's tons of testimony for sauce. Phonefaging so I'm going to provide direction in interpretation of the backfires in place of linking every source here. You all know how to find it quickly any how.
A. It is not my experience that grass fires will burn hot enough to cremate skeletal remains. Nor would it make sense for a person familiar with hunting and ranching to start a fire thinking it would do so. Pastures are frequently burned to remove old growth in the spring, bones of deceased cattle/wildlife remain.
B. It is very common practice to start backfires to prevent wildfires from spreading. Stockpiled grass is their cattles lifeline to survival through the winter. It absolutely makes sense that one would protect this necessary resource.
C. From memory, in one instance they were prosecuted for as little as 5 acres of federal land burning, though they saved houndreds of acres from burning.
D. The federal government is completely protected from prosecution/legal remedy if their prescribed burning burns private acreage. There are numerous cited examples of this unequal stance of the law.
The BLM was tyrannical in their treatment of the Hammond's.
