Not long ago they tried to bully India by starting construction on a road into India's side of the line in the Himalayas. The Indian response was immediate and decisive. They started building roads toward the potential battle area, and developing forward logistics. No possible way for China to force its way through and they knew it. Just pushing to see if they could bully India. Answer: no. So they retreated and lost face.

 

And no one has acceded to their military development of the S. China Sea. Their important sea routes could be closed and they would be twisting on the vine.

 

Meanwhile, as you point out, they are on the verge of major trouble financially. Don't think they will dump the AU though. That is the basis of their position in the soon-to-be-revealed new monetary order for the world. And metals are going to be of major importance.
