I was driving the pipeline ROW long time ago. Stopped where there was an out cropping of slate. Got my roll of toilet paper, pulled my pants and stooped down. Heard the rattle behind me. I pulled up pants as I slowly walked away. There were a den of rattlers in the air spaces between the layers of slate. I counted 3. One of them was only 2 feet away. You're right, I would never pick up a rattler by it's tail. I'm not stupid.
