A beach volleyball player convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl is set to represent his country the Paris Olympics.
A beach volleyball player who has been convicted of raping a young girl is set to represent the Netherlands at the Paris Olympics.
Steven van de Velde, who admitted to three counts of rape of a 12-year-old British girl, is set to compete with his volleyball partner Matthew Immers as one of two men’s Dutch beach volleyball teams next month.
Van de Velde travelled from Amsterdam to the UK and raped the schoolgirl in 2014, after the pair met over Facebook. Van de Velde was aware of the child’s age at the time, a court later heard.
The volleyball player was sentenced to four years in prison in March 2016 after admitting three counts of rape.
He was released after serving just one year of his sentence.

When Donald Trump and Joe Biden met for their first debate back in September 2020, the most explosive moment was notable to many Jewish viewers: Trump stopped short of condemning white supremacists and told the Proud Boys, a far-right group, to “stand back and stand by.”
This Thursday, as Trump and Biden meet in Atlanta during their second race, for what will be their third debate in total, viewers are likely to see more moments of Jewish significance — from disagreements over the Israel-Hamas war to a discussion of antisemitism. The Jewish identity of both of the moderators, CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, might also be a factor.
In addition, expect segments on several issues that, polls show, are usually on Jews’ minds at the voting booth, such as abortion, climate change and the future of US democracy. Immigration, a topic of historical Jewish concern, will almost certainly be a focus.
Here’s a look at what to expect when the two candidates meet onstage on Thursday.
Trump will likely attack the moderators as well as Biden
Both CNN moderators, Bash and Tapper, are Jewish — and have woven their Jewish experiences into their news analysis. That’s been especially true for Tapper when he’s reported on the authoritarian tendencies of Trump and his defenders.
Most recently, Tapper has likened Trump’s rhetoric to Adolf Hitler’s. Tapper has said that the former president’s claims that migrants to the United States are “poisoning the blood” of Americans echo passages in Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”
That has put Trump into fighting mode: His nickname for the CNN anchor is “Fake Tapper.” So expect him to lash out. Whether either anchor’s Judaism comes up alongside references to the Hitler comparisons, however, is more of an open question.

Israel has accused the slain charity worker of making rockets for Palestinian militants
The Israeli army has said that the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) staffer killed during Tuesday’s airstrike on Gaza City was actually a “terrorist” with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Fadi Al-Wadiya had served as an operative for more than 15 years and helped build rockets that Palestinian militants fire into Israeli cities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Avichay Adraee said. He added that Al-Wadiya was the armed group’s “expert in the fields of electronics and chemistry.”
On Wednesday, the IDF released a photo it said shows Al-Wadiya wearing the uniform of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. “A physiotherapist by day, a jihad operative by night,” Adraee said, arguing that the case is “a reminder of how terrorist organizations in Gaza use international aid organizations as a human shield.”
The charity has denied that its staffer was a terrorist, saying that Al-Wadiya was killed when riding a bicycle to a clinic where he worked. “Killing a healthcare worker while on his way to provide vital medical care to wounded victims of the endless massacres across Gaza is beyond shocking; it’s cynical and abhorrent,” said Caroline Seguin, MSF operations manager for Palestine. The organization said that five other people, including three children, were killed by the same airstrike.

“Fadi was executed by an Israeli strike and no proof of any wrongdoing on his part has been shared with MSF. Only an independent investigation will be able to establish the facts,” the charity said in a statement on its website.
Al-Wadiya was the sixth member of MSF staff and one of more than 500 health workers killed by the Israeli forces since the fighting erupted in Gaza eight months ago, the organization said.
The current conflict was triggered by the October 7 surprise raid by Hamas and allied militant groups into southern Israel, which left some 1,200 people dead and more than 250 abducted into Gaza. Israel responded by blockading Gaza and carried out a bombing campaign that was followed by a ground invasion. Almost 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, according to local Hamas-run authorities.
