We don't pick animals to "be" so far as I know. Anons use animals as images. We also use Bane from the plane scene, or other recognizable characters or tropes. Otherwise our memes would get too serious or too wordy or both. I might use Pepe the frog (or some other animal) to make a meme, but that doesn't mean I see myself as a frog.
