UPDATE: Crews repaired the man-made tunnel on NB SR 529 that was discovered this AM. Maintenance removed damaged asphalt & cleaned the void. They backfilled w/ gravel, and just finished resurfacing with asphalt. This needs time to cure & then we can reopen the road. No exact ETA. x.com/wsdot_traffic/…

EVERETT, Wash. — A stretch of northbound State Route 529 at Marine View Drive in Everett was closed for several hours Tuesday due to a large hole that formed on the road from someone tunneling underneath the roadway.

 

Road crews found the damage around 7 a.m. and were forced to perform emergency maintenancenear the Steamboat Slough Bridgeto repair the damage, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The state says a hole in the road, north of Marine View Drive in Everett, was caused by an individual making a tunnel.This is the second time in Everett that a man-made tunnel caused a highway lane closure. In 2021, WSDOT temporarily closed the northbound Interstate 5 exit to Pacific Avenue as a precaution.14 hours ago
