I wasn’t surprised to see how badly President Joe Biden performed last week in his first debate showdown with former President Donald Trump. The warning signs have been apparent for a long time, despite outright lies and denial from the White House and Biden advisers who’ve had the audacity to tell us that the president, 81, is A-OK. But a lot of Americans probably haven’t paid as close of attention, and many of them were honestly surprised by the president’s physical and mental state. I hope they’re paying attention now. And the latest polls make it seem like they are. I'll get to that in a bit.

A U.S. judge on Wednesday blocked the Biden administration from enforcing a new rule against discrimination on the basis of gender identity in healthcare while he hears a lawsuit challenging it by 15 Republican-led states. The rule was finalized in May, opens new tab by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and was set to take effect on Friday. It states that a federal prohibition on sex discrimination, part of the Affordable Care Act health insurance law, extends to discrimination against transgender people. States opposing the new rule had said in their lawsuit that it would require their Medicaid programs

Joe Biden’s campaign is imploding after last week’s debate, where the former president handily beat the president in the 90-minute televised event. The Democratic Party base is in full panic mode, its donor base infuriated, and there are growing calls to replace Biden on the ticket. Barack Obama has weighed in, telling allies that Joe’s path to 270 might not be there after his disastrous debate performance. It seems like a situation where old-school Trump would be poking the bear, mocking the president’s misfortune. Instead, he’s gone quiet, and it’s effective.

The president’s spending on staffers totaled $60.8 million for the 2024 fiscal year, marking the highest level adjusted for inflation recorded over the past two presidential administrations, according to an analysis conducted by Open The Books. Biden employed over 500 staffers in three of the four fiscal years he has been in office, including 565 during the 2024 fiscal year, a headcount benchmark not hit since the Nixon administration in 1971.

Satellite images show Chinese electronic eavesdropping stations in Cuba are expanding, with new facilities constructed at a site about 70 miles from the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay.

I come from a family that was split because my dad's Cuban-Puerto Rican, and I grew up around New York City at a time when that mattered.
I know firsthand the ravages of racism. I know what it's like to have somebody say of my sister, who is this dark person in my living room? Which one of her friend's father said.
I understand what it's like to walk into a public place and wonder if somebody has noticed me as something other than what they are.
I'll stand with anyone that wants to punish bigoted action, but to constrain speech is to take on a role that you were not elected for and with all due respect, this community can forgive and forget the good intentions of you as you go about your righteous business of deciding zoning issues and city policy.
But this community will not long forget you crossing a line and deciding what is and is not acceptable speech and thought.
