LME volumes hit 10-year high in second quarter, led by nickel

(What this reflects is two things: A push to make it appear that Global growth is not slowing down-a five year old can see this-by purchasing the contracts on commodities to push up prices and actual demand for raw materials. They don’t mention Silver however that has been taken off the COMEX delivery mechanism cuz they don’t habs it and those contracts are “paid off” via the EFP (Exchange For Physical) process at COMEX and transferred to LME-which technically is not an exchange-for delivery….there is a 600m/Oz short position on Silver and the largest ever so how that affects/adds to the pressure in the paper world it lives in is for every one Oz of real physical Ag there are about tree-fiddy (350) or moar claims of ownership via the paper markets-ETFs, Derivatives, shared ownership/storage, etc.)

Futures and options average daily volumes on the London Metal Exchange (LME) hit a 10-year peak in the second quarter, jumping 27% year on year, the exchange said on Thursday.

Average daily volumes in the second quarter totalled 730,385 lots, its statement said. The world’s oldest and largest market for industrial metals did not give a reason for the sharp rise, but copper volumes hit a record high in May on the back of speculative and fund buying. Copper volumes were up 27%, but nickel led the way with a 77% surge in the quarter. Nickel volumes have rebounded this year after languishing since a March 2022 price spike that caused the LME to suspend trading. Total first-half average daily volumes on the exchange, which is owned by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd, were up 29% year on year.

==LME to Suspend Deliveries of Nickel From Norilsk Finland Plant

The London Metal Exchange is suspending deliveries of nickel from a plant in Finland owned by Russia’s MMC Norilsk Nickel PJSC, whose products have continued to be deliverable despite western sanctions on Russian metal. No new deliveries of nickel cathodes and briquettes from Norilsk’s Harjavalta plant will be allowed from Oct. 3, the LME said in two separate notices Wednesday. The bourse did not say why it was taking the action, but it has delisted numerous metal brands this year after requiring them to comply with responsible-sourcing rules. The plant at Harjavalta is a major producer of refined nickel, with total capacity of 65,000 tons a year, according to Norilsk’s annual report, compared to the miner’s total production of 208,000 tons last year.
