Jul 03, 2024, • 03:39pm

Prominent businessman and former Auckland Council chief executive Doug McKay was holidaying with his wife in the US when she was killed during a robbery.

McKay and Patricia, known as Trish, were in California when two men attempted to rob them outside Fashion Island Mall in Newport at about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Newport Beach Police Sergeant Steve Oberon told Orange County Register she was dragged into the parking lot near the Barnes & Noble store during a struggle and was run over by the suspects who fled the scene.

Doug McKay was left uninjured.

McKay has a long history in business spanning more than 35 years and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and local government in 2015.

He is currently the chair and independent director of energy company Vector and a director of IAG Holdings Ltd. He is also an independent non-executive director of the National Australia Bank (NAB).

McKay recently retired from the BNZ board after being a member since March 2013 and the Chair since August 2015 and was the Eden Park Trust Board chairman.

He has had a number of other directorship and chief executive roles with numerous organisations including Lion Nathan, Carter Holt Harvey, Goodman Fielder, Sealord, Independent Liquor, Proctor & Gamble, Fletcher Building Limited, Genesis Energy Limited and Ryman Healthcare Limited.

He was Auckland Council's first chief executive following the formation of the Super City in 2010. He left the role in 2013.

He had the highest salary an Auckland Council chief executive had ever received, which was $797,455 in August 2013.

He was criticised in 2020 for saying Waiheke Island was “full of activists and lunatics”, during a presentation to Auckland Council's Finance and Performance meeting without realising his computer mic was on.
