It just means they are hypocrites and phonies. The Jews didn't know how to interpret the Old Testament. The 'good' Jews were probably totally resonating with what Jesus was saying but, it is not easy to give up power and status. For example, it is punishable by death for a Jew to work on Saturday (Sabbath), yet when was the last time you heard of a Jew getting stoned to death over breaking it? Even something as simple as picking up sticks counts. The Jews did not learn the lesson from Exodus, or from Genesis for that matter.
