Aileen Cannon Just Put Trump Case 'in Reverse': AttorneyKEK

Published Jul 06, 2024 at 4:21 PM EDT1/2

US. District Judge Aileen Cannon has thrown a curveball in former President Donald Trump's classified documents case, with former federal prosecutor and legal analyst Glenn Kirschner saying on Saturday that the judge put the entire case "in reverse."

Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee, has pleaded not guilty to Department of Justice (DOJ) special counsel Jack Smith's indictment where it's alleged that he retained classified materials after he left the White House in January 2021 and then obstructed the federal attempt to retrieve them from his Mar-a-Lago resort residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump has maintained his innocence in the case.

On Saturday, Cannon, a Trump appointee who is overseeing the high-profile case, issued a paperless order that paused several crucial deadlines. The move comes in response to Trump's request for more discussion on presidential immunity following the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling in a separate case involving the former president.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in a 6-3 majority ruling on Monday that Trump is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his "official acts" carried out in office in a ruling connected to his federal 2020 election interference case.

Cannon's decision has effectively pressed pause on when Trump's team needs to share expert information, when they must provide reciprocal discovery, and when Smith's team has to submit certain classified document procedures.Cannon has given both sides two weeks to argue whether more immunity talk is necessary.

Kirschner, a former assistant U.S. attorney and frequent critic of the former president, didn't mince words when discussing the ruling on MSNBC's The Katie Phang Show.

The legal expert shared his frustration with Cannon's quick response to Trump's legal team's request while seemingly ignoring earlier motions from the prosecution.

"Think back to May when Jack Smith, special counsel, filed a motion asking Judge Cannon to modify Donald Trump's conditions of release to stop him from saying and posting things that were endangering law enforcement," Kirschner said.

He continued noting the timing of Cannon's decisions and added:"She has yet to act on that, and yet within 24 hours of Donald Trump's attorneys asking her to do something, she couldn't jump on it quickly enoughand entered an order basically taking a train that we're going to be taking that was already stopped dead in its tracks and putting it in reverse. So, she's moving away from a trial date rather than toward a trial date."

2/2(It's always happy day when the DS moan and groan)

Meanwhile, prosecutors want Cannon to impose a gag order on the former presidentfor falsely claiming that the FBI was instructed to shoot him if necessary while conducting a raid at Mar-a-Lago in August 2022 to retrieve the classified documents. That was based on an erroneous interpretation of a standard FBI search order request, which states that agents are trained to use lethal force. It is a printed formula that is standard for FBI search warrant requests.

However, the FBI said in a statement that the wording of the warrant was standard and the phrase "deadly force" was also included when agents searched President Joe Biden's Delaware home for classified materials.

"The FBI followed standard protocol in this search as we do for all search warrants, which includes a standard policy statement limiting the use of deadly force. No one ordered additional steps to be taken and there was no departure from the norm in this matter," the agency's statement said.

Kirschner further asked on Saturday: "What is the Department of Justice supposed to do to dismiss it?Because Donald Trump would love to retake the reins of presidential power so he can flex his absolute presidential immunity muscle." (Man this “expert” is profoundly whiny, when they don’t get their way, they have tantrums.)

Newsweek has reached out to the DOJ online form and Trump's office via email for comment on Saturday.

Trump's legal team is likely viewing this as a win since they've consistently argued for more time to address the immunity issue. On the flip side, prosecutors have warned that each day of delay could pose a national security risk, given the classified nature of the documents in question.

Kirschner, meanwhile on Saturday, didn't hold back in his criticism of the broader implications.

"We have an imperial Supreme Court that just said presidents are also imperial," he said. "They are monarch-like, and they now have the power of lawlessness with impunity and immunity."

This case isn't just about one former president—it's a test for the entire system of justice. It raises questions about presidential power, accountability, and the balance between fair trials and national security concerns. (Wow, they are pissed that their evil plans to put him in jail before November is not working, the whole charade is dissolving before their eyes. (THIS SMELL OF REALL PANIC, DC MUST BE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT ANOTHER PLAN.Meanwhile their Resident is incapable of coherent speech still)

As Kirschner noted during his MSNBC appearance, "If that isn't concerning and if that doesn't get people up and out to the polls together with everything else, I don't know what will."

In addition, Trump's classified documents case remains just one of several legal challenges he faces as he eyes another run at the White House against Biden. (BOO HOO all their plans are falling apart.)

Macron refuses French PM’s resignation

Gabriel Attal should remain in office temporarily to ensure stability after shock elections, the Elysee Palace has said

French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal following the second round of national elections that left France with a hung parliament and no clear candidate to replace him.

The New Popular Front (NFP), which unites various leftist parties, cruised to a surprise victory in Sunday voting, claiming 182 seats in the National Assembly, according to the Interior Ministry. Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance recovered after a poor performance in the first round and got 163 seats.

The rightist National Rally (RN), which was considered the favorite after trouncing Macron’s bloc in the first round, came third, with 143 seats. However, none of the groups was able to clinch the 289 seats required for an absolute majority in the legislature.

Macron’s office said in a statement on Monday that “the president has asked Gabriel Attal to remain prime minister for the time being in order to ensure the country’s stability.”

Riots occurred in Paris, Rennes and several other cities after the polls closed, with masked mobs tossing bottles at the police and setting bonfires in the streets. Officers used tear gas to disperse the angry crowds.

The snap election in France took place just three weeks before the 2024 Summer Olympic Games kick off in the capital.

Attal said on Sunday that after Macron’s coalition lost the election, “in keeping with republican tradition, I will tender my resignation to the president of the Republic tomorrow morning.”

However, the PM stressed that he would remain in the job “as long as duty requires” if his resignation is turned down. “Being prime minister is the honor of my life,” the 35-year-old said.

Attal was appointed PM this January, becoming the youngest and the first openly gay head of government in French history. He previously served as the Minister of National Education and Youth, the Minister of Public Action and Accounts and as spokesman for the government of France.

NATO won’t give Zelensky what he wants – AFP

Kiev will “have to accept whatever is offered” by the bloc short of full-fledged membership, the agency reports

NATO will clearly signal to Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky that his country will not become a member of the military bloc anytime soon, and that Ukraine will have to take whatever the West offers at this point, AFP reported on Monday, citing sources.

Bloc leaders will reiterate their willingness to continue backing Ukraine at a summit in Washington later this week, the agency said, but “they will not give Zelensky what he wants most: a firm invite for his war-torn country to join their nuclear-armed alliance anytime soon.”

Unnamed Western officials told AFP that they are hoping to avoid a public rift with Ukraine at the event, similar to the one that occurred last year when Zelensky blasted NATO for its “unprecedented and absurd” policy of not setting a timeframe for Ukraine’s accession. (Just like you'll never be a woman Zelensky, you will never be invited into NATO.)

According to several diplomats, “NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg set out what was on offer at a meeting with the Ukrainian leader ahead of time.”

“The scene is better prepared now,” an unnamed NATO diplomat told the agency. “Zelensky will have to accept whatever is offered.”

The agency also noted, citing Ukrainian officials, that Kiev had made peace with the fact it would not receive an invitation to join NATO at the summit, adding thatUkraine intends to promote the “sense of guilt” among bloc members to accomplish its other goals.

When it comes to specific NATO commitments, Zelensky is reportedly poised to receive a promise of new air-defense system deliveries, with other measures to assist Ukraine to be put on “a firmer footing.”

According to one diplomat, a promise of new air defenses, in the absence of other substantive commitments, could allow Zelensky to declare the summit a victory for Kiev. “What would you want more? Nice words in a declaration that don’t mean much or military support?” the source added.

NATO member states first agreed that Ukraine would eventually join NATO back in 2008 without providing a specific timeline. After the Western-backed coup in Kiev in 2014, Ukraine designated NATO membership as a strategic foreign policy objective. In the autumn of 2022, it submitted an official application to the bloc after four of its former regions voted overwhelmingly to join Russia.

Meanwhile, Moscow has traditionally viewed NATO expansion towards its borders as a threat, with President Vladimir Putin saying Ukraine’s plans to join the bloc were one of the key reasons for the conflict.

(Seems like the West is giving Zelensky and his whining the boot soon, he’ll cry like a baby, but that’s just tough. Z lost favor with his benefactors; he took it too far.)

Orban estimates probability of Russian defeat

The Ukraine conflict cannot end in Kiev’s favor on the battlefield, the Hungarian prime minister has said

The balance of military strength in the Ukraine conflict is so much in Russia's favor that its defeat on the battlefield is inconceivable, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes.

Orban has stirred anger in the West, particularly in the EU, with his decision to travel to Russia last week. The trip was part of what he terms a “peace mission” and came on the back of a similar visit to Kiev. He has since visited China before flying to the US to attend a summit of NATO leaders this week.

In an interview with the German tabloid Bild published on Monday, Orban made a case for the urgency of peace talks, warning that in the next few months hostilities between Russia and Ukraine would escalate further.

”The Russians are determined. The intensity of the confrontation, the number of deaths, the number of victims will be more brutal than in the last seven months,”he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has a “clear vision” of what he wants to achieve in the conflict, as does Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, Orban said. But Moscow has vastly superior military strength.

Putin cannot lose, considering the balance of soldiers, equipment and technology. A Russian defeat is difficult to imagine. The probability that Russia could actually lose is too small to calculate.

EU nations share the responsibility for the hostilities persisting, because “Europe also has a war policy” Orban claimed. They also suffered collateral economic damage, so ending the war is in the EU’s selfish interests too, he added

Putin vowed last month that he will order a ceasefire the minute Kiev renounces its ambition to make Ukraine a NATO member and pulls troops out of territories that Moscow claims under its sovereignty.

The Ukrainian government has rejected the proposal. Kiev hopes to pressure Moscow with the help of its Western backers to withdraw troops from all lands that it considers Ukrainian.

Zelensky told Bloomberg last week that his nation has 14 underequipped brigades on standby waiting for more Western weapons to arrive in Ukraine.

”We have the intention to fight, but we don’t have the tools,” he claimed.

The Ukrainian leader added that he will order new “counteroffensive actions” once his troops get more arms. (KEK, you are not getting what you want, you are just sending your men to die in a battle that has already been won by Russia, you just won’t admit, because the money is more important.)
