A lesser-known battle has emerged within the White House in a bid to keep the president of the United States in his healthiest state ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
According to Joe Biden’s aides, the 80-year-old president eats “like a child” with a food palette that skews beige, Axios reported.
His favourite meals include peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pizza, cookies, angel hair spaghetti with tomato sauce and most famously, ice cream.
A longtime Biden adviser told The Washington Post “he has the tastes of a 5-year-old.”
During his vice presidency, Biden made sure his staff kept the fridge stocked at his official D.C. residence with Häagen-Dazs vanilla chocolate chip ice cream, stating it as his “biggest vice.”
Chris Freeman, a former Washington caterer who frequently worked for Biden said he is “a man of the people, and his taste in food reflects that proletarian approach.”
Senator Christopher A. Coons told The Washington Post that Biden carries his own lunch in “not quite a lunch pail, but it’s his little bag of stuff,” that generally contains a protein bar, orange Gatorade (his favourite beverage) and a peanut butter sandwich.
“The thing that everybody makes fun of me is when in doubt I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” he said in a podcast episode of “Here’s the Deal.”
He also revealed his fondness for Fig Newtons.
“They’re small and I can sneak them. You know that you can buy little packs of them and I get them on the planes when I fly back and forth.”
First Lady Jill, however, teeters on the healthier side with a fruit and veggie-heavy diet.
“I’m a pretty healthy eater,” she told Parade in a 2021 interview. “I try to find fresh fruits and vegetables, though that’s not always easy.”
She adds more vegetables wherever she can to make dishes a little bit healthier.
The president’s sister Valerie Biden Owens noted in her memoir that during a private dinner at the White House in 2021, Jill had selected their entrees: salmon in a pastry shell with a medley of vegetables.
“Damn, she makes me eat this healthy stuff all the time,” Valerie recounted him saying.
With the first lady out of sight, she recalled, Biden had some lemon pound cake and finished a carton of Breyer’s chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.
