if u are a critical thinker you should ask yourself, why? why is the us paying for nato? because the nato in actuality is just an extension of the DoD, operatively. politically it involves creating "the market" or legitimise nato to the parliaments in respective country, hence the russia scare, etc, thing is politicians will have a hard time selling increased nato expenditure in their own countries since in actual reality russia is no threat and a threat that would legitimise nato from europe's perspective doesn't exist.
