ICYMI: Musk Warns Voting Machines and Mail-In Ballots ‘Too Risky.’
Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has criticized mail-in voting and voting machines as being “too risky” on his X platform, formerly Twitter.
“Electronic voting machines and anything mailed in is too risky,” Musk wrote, adding: “We should mandate paper ballots and in-person voting only.
“Musk, who also owns SpaceX and Tesla, shared several reports on security concerns around voting machines over the past decade. One of the articles shared by the South African billionaire outlines possible problems with voting machines using the Windows CE operating system, which was 20 years old at the time the article was published in 2016.
He also stressed the work of Professor Alex Halderman, who exposed “critical vulnerabilities” in voting machines in 2021.In another post on X, Musk endorsed the use of paper ballots, quoting another X user saying Argentina was able to count as many as 27 million ballots in less than six hours. “This should be a requirement. If Argentina can do it, so can America!” Musk said.
Musk also backed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act legislation, which is being pushed by House Republicans and aims to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections. Quoting a post touting the SAVE Act by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Musk wrote:
“Those who oppose this are traitors.
All Caps: TRAITORS.”The SAVE Act revises the National Voter Registration Act to require proof of citizenship for individuals who register to vote and mandates the removal of all foreign nationals from state voter rolls.
Survey data published earlier this year reveals that Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID laws, paper ballots, and election day holidays, among other voting measures.
