Sun unleashes powerful X-class solar flare triggering radio blackouts over Australia, Southeast Asia and Japan
July 15, 2024
Just as we were beginning to think "The sun has been rather quiet of late," it silences the critics with an explosive X-class flare, the most powerful class of solar flare.
The solar flare from sunspot AR3738 occurred late Saturday night (July 13) at 10:34 p.m. EDT (0234 UT on July 14) and NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the dynamic scene from space.
Unfortunately for aurora chasers, the short-lived flare did not produce a coronal mass ejection (CME) — a large expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the sun.
Solar physicist Keith Strong has been keeping an eye out for any signs of CMEs from the recent eruptions but according to his recent post on X , "there is unlikely to be any geomagnetic activity as a result of the high solar activity."
However, the flare did cause shortwave radio blackouts across Australia, Southeast Asia, and Japan shortly after the eruption.
These blackouts are common following powerful solar flares due to the intense bursts of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation emitted during these events.
The radiation from solar flares travels to Earth at the speed of light and ionizes (electrically charges) the upper atmosphere upon arrival. This ionization creates a denser environment for high-frequency shortwave radio signals to pass through, to facilitate communication over long distances. As radio waves interact with electrons in the ionized layers, they lose energy due to increased collisions, which can degrade or completely absorb the radio signals.
Solar flares are eruptions from the sun's surface that release powerful bursts of electromagnetic radiation. These flares occur when the magnetic energy built up in the solar atmosphere is released.
They are categorized by size into different classes with X-class flares being the strongest. M-class flares are 10 times less powerful than X-class flares, followed by C-class flares which are 10 times weaker than M-class flares, B-class are 10 times weaker than C-class flares and finally, A-class flares which are 10 times weaker than B-class flares and have no noticeable consequences on Earth.
Within each class, numbers from 1-10 (and beyond for X-class flares) describe a flare's relative strength.
The recent solar flare eruption on July 14 clocked in an X-1.27 according to Space Weather Live.

CMSSF makes inaugural CENTCOM Guardian visit
July 15, 2024
In a historic first, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force John Bentivegna made an official visit to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility July 12-14.
This visit underscores the Space Force's commitment to supporting global operations and enhancing partnerships with allies in the region.
During the visit, Bentivegna met with leaders and Guardians across the installation to emphasize the importance of addressing Great Power Competition. As geopolitical dynamics shift, the Space Force's role in ensuring space superiority and resilience becomes increasingly critical.
“Great Power Competition holds significant strategic importance for the Space Force," Bentivegna said.
“As global dynamics are tested and domains become more and more congested, we need to always be ready and able to effectively operate, both at home and while deployed.”
During the tour, he engaged with Guardians on serving in a deployed environment, showcasing the Space Force's commitment to maintaining operational readiness and achieving mission objectives, both on the ground and in space.
“I would like to say thank you,” Bentivegna said. “Thank each and every one of you for supporting the mission here. Our mission is vital, and it doesn’t happen without you.”
The CMSSF also spoke about implementing the Space Force Generation model and the expectations given to Guardians under the new rotational model.
Unlike pre-existing force generation processes built around physically deployable forces, space forces are primarily employed-in-place, driving the need for a unique force generation model.
This model has three phases — Prepare, Ready, and Commit — establishing a predictable, standardized battle rhythm that combat squadrons or detachments rotate through.
"The unique mission of the Space Force enables us to generate combat capability while employed-in-place at our stateside bases," Bentivegna said.
"While some Guardian functions are essential in theater, the majority operate from the U.S., delivering crucial warfighting capabilities to combatant commanders and the joint force.”
This visit to the CENTCOM AOR represents a pivotal step in the Space Force's mission to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and beyond.
The discussions and engagements held during this visit aim to shape the future of space operations and international cooperation.
“In the past two days, I've personally observed the critical importance of cultivating relationships with other branches of the [Defense Department] and our coalition partners,” Bentivegna said.
“Collaboration is absolutely essential, particularly within the domain of space."

Inside world's 'creepiest' McDonald’s as UFO-themed branch in alien obsessed town
15:49, 14 JUL 2024
Not all McDonald's are cut from the same cloth, as one particularly creepy branch demonstrates.
The bizarre branch, found in the belly of US alien county in Roswell, New Mexico, is boldly different from any other McDonald’s branch around.
Its unique selling point is that it is UFO-themed, and in fact, shaped like a flying saucer.
It also comes with an alien-themed play area that juts out from the side of the building.
Roadside America, a guide book dedicated to “uniquely odd tourist attractions”, claims it’s the world’s only flying saucer-shaped Maccas.
It noted: “This is the world’s only McDonald’s shaped like a flying saucer.
"Its aerodynamic qualities have been compromised by its need to enclose a Playland, although the restaurant has tried to compensate by outfitting its indoor statues of Ronald McDonald and his various Playland pals in space suits.”
Add an extra dimension to your visit by going at night, when LED lighting lights up the building so it appears to look even more like a UFO.
It’s not the only alien-inspired tourist attraction in town. Since an extra-terrestrial mystery took place in 1947, the town has developed a fascination for aliens.
In a Reddit thread, locals discussed other UFO-themed sights near to the “creepy looking” McDonald’s branch.
One local said: “Familiar with the area and it’s a lot. All the street lights downtown are alien heads with eyes. The local car dealership’s logo is a UFO.
"They have toned it down as you get out of downtown though, I think they got rid of the giant UFO painted on Walmart with the last paint job.”
Roswell got a taste for visitors from out of space following an alleged incident where a farmer discovers unidentifiable debris in one of his fields, not far from where the McDonald’s was built.
Although airforce officials say the broken object was as crashed weather balloon, many believe it was the remains of a flying saucer.

Pentagon Releases New Report With Analysis Of Alleged Roswell UFO Crash Debris
JULY 15, 2024 10:11 AM
When it comes to the subject of UFOs and aliens, the so-called Roswell incident is right up there near the top of the list of conspiracy theories.
For almost 80 years, people have been arguing over whether the United States Army lied about what actually happened in June and July of 1947.
Much of the UFO and alien speculation stems from the fact that the Army initially reported to the public that they had come into possession of a “flying disc.”
That story was then retracted within a day and changed to say that what they found was actually nothing more than a weather balloon.
The conspiracy theory was further fueled in 1978 when retired Air Force officer Jesse Marcel (seen in the photo above with the alleged debris from Roswell) claimed that the weather balloon story had been a cover-up and that the crash debris the Army found was actually extraterrestrial in nature.
Now, the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) decided that 75 years after the Roswell incident they would have some of the crash debris analyzed.
So, in 2022, they sent a sample of the alleged crashed UFO to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Last Thursday, Oak Ridge issued a report, without actually mentioning Roswell specifically, detailing their findings after two years of analysis.
“This specimen has been publicly alleged to be a component recovered from a crashed extraterrestrial vehicle in 1947, and purportedly exhibits extraordinary properties, such as functioning as a terahertz waveguide to generate antigravity capabilities,” the AARO explained in its report.
“Considering all available evidence, AARO assesses that this specimen is likely a test object, a manufacturing product or byproduct, or a material component of aerospace performance studies to evaluate the properties of [magnesium] alloys.”
The person who has publicly alleged this is Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge and his independent research organization To The Stars Academy which provided the sample to the AARO.
“Although the origin, chain of custody, and ultimate purpose of this specimen remain unclear, a modern and robust analysis of its chemical and structural composition and properties does not indicate that its origin is non-terrestrial, nor do the data indicate that the material examined ever had the pure single-crystalline bismuth layer that could possibly have acted as a terahertz waveguide,” Oak Ridge stated in its report.
The report essentially chalks up the unusual material to being nothing more than “experimental [magnesium] alloys” that were being tested “for airframes, engines, weapons, and delivery systems starting in 1915 and peaking during World War II.”
“Unsurprisingly, records of failed [magnesium] alloy designs are scant. Neither AARO nor ORNL could verify the specimen’s historical origin. Unverifiable, conflicting personal accounts complicate its undocumented chain of custody,” they concluded.
