=Following Assassination Attempt President Trump Says He Will Rewrite Convention Speech

July 14, 2024 | Sundance | (This is really good, I'll post the Washington Examiner piece also)

Journalist Salena Zito was in the stands on Saturday because she was pre-scheduled to interview President Trump on the return trip to Bedminster, NJ. Obviously that interview never took place. However, today on the flight to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, President Trump talked exclusively to Mrs. Zito, who writes for the Washington Examiner.

A reflective President Trump seemingly begins to absorb how fortunate he was to have the protection of God in a split second.

Salena Zito – Former President Donald Trump has completely rewritten his convention speech in light of the assassination attempt against him on Saturday and will call on Thursday for a new effort at national unity.

[…] “The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” he said, “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches” aimed mostly at the policies of President Joe Biden. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

[…]Trump said people all across the country from different walks of life and different political views have called him, and he noted that he was saved from death because he turned from the crowd to look at a screen showing data he was using in his speech.

“That reality is just setting in,” he said. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

[…]“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,”he said.

[…] Trump hailed Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief who was shot and killed at the rally, and two other supporters, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were wounded and are recovering at a local hospital in stable condition.

Trump said his decision to raise his hand when the Secret Service was leading him off stage was to let the people there know he was OK, “And that America goes on, we go forward, that we are strong,” he said. (Read More)

Trump rewrites Republican convention speech to focus on unity not Biden

BySalena Zito July 14, 2024 8:34 pm (Here is the original article from Washington Examiner)

WORLD EXCLUSIVE — Former President Donald Trump has completely rewritten his convention speech in light of the assassination attempt against him on Saturday and will call on Thursday for a new effort at national unity.

In an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner a day after being hit by a sniper’s bullet,Trump said he wanted to take advantage of a historic moment and draw the country together.

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” Trump said. “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches” aimed mostly at the policies of President Joe Biden.

“Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

He has switched, he said, from planning to excite his voter base to one thatdemonstrates his belief that the attack on him at a rally in Pennsylvania had changed the election campaign entirely. Both Republicans and Democrats have acknowledged this in the aftermath of Saturday’s shocking incident.

Trump said people all across the country from different walks of life and different political views have called him, and he noted that he was saved from death because he turned from the crowd to look at a screen showing data he was using in his speech.

“That reality is just setting in,” he said. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

Talking as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday and lasts through Thursday, Trump said his speech will meet the moment that history demands.“It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance,” he said.(OK, that is profound)

Early Sunday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening” and that he would “fear not.” Again, in talking to the Washington Examiner, he invoked “God” for his deliverance.

“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said.

The Washington Examiner’s interview with Trump had been due to take place on his airplane on the return flight from the rally to Bedminster. That arrangement put this reporter just feet from Trump when he was shot.

Trump hailed Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief who was shot and killed at the rally, and two other supporters, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were wounded and are recovering at a local hospital in stable condition.

Trump said his decision to raise his hand when the Secret Service was leading him offstage was to let the people there know he was OK “and that America goes on, we go forward, that we are strong,” he said.

The photograph of him holding his fist in the air, blood streaming across his face as the agents surrounded him, has already become the iconic image of the 2024 election.

If he speaks in Milwaukee of uniting the country, it would echo President Ronald Reagan, who, in 1981, projected strength as he, too, recovered from wounds (far graver than Trump’s) inflicted by a would-be assassin in Washington, D.C.

Trump said when he stood up and saw the crowd had not moved, he needed to tell them that he and the country were going to be OK: “The energy coming from the people there in that moment, they just stood there. It’s hard to describe what that felt like, but I knew the world was looking. I knew that history would judge this, and I knew I had to let them know we are OK.”

Trump rally shooting upends Democrats' Biden crisis

Congressional Democrats' all-consuming angst over President Biden's candidacy has taken an abrupt backseat in lawmakers' minds in the wake of an assassination attempt against former President Trump.

Why it matters: Democratic lawmakers say their immediate focus is on their personal security and that of their staffs, not on their party's political woes, helping to allow a crucial cooldown period for the embattled president.

"We're all just focused on expressing condolences … and keeping our teams safe," said one House Democrat who has been fiercely critical of Biden.

A senior House Democrat suggested the post shooting atmosphere in the party is too "chaotic" for internal battles over leadership.

State of play: Biden was engaged in a high-stakes outreach campaign to Capitol Hill in the hours leading up to the shooting at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left a bystander and the shooter dead.

As part of an effort to stop the flow of statements urging him to end his reelection bid, Biden met Saturday afternoon with the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the center-left New Democrat Coalition.

The latter call was described by lawmakers present as "tense" and a "disaster" for the president, who, they said, was combative in the face of questions about how he plans to turn around his flagging campaign.

That call came after Biden was told by Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) during a call with Hispanic Caucus members that he should drop out of the race.

Biden also met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in Delaware on Saturday, with Schumer calling it a "good meeting."

The intrigue: In a "Face the Nation" interview on Sunday morning, Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) largely pulled his punches despite Biden shouting at him on the New Democrats call after he asked about eroding public confidence in the president's leadership.

"Listen, you know, this is a tough business. There's a lot at stake. Emotions can run high," Crow said of the call on CBS.

He added: "I think the president heard our message very clearly, and in fact he promised to come back to use with more information to address our concerns and to answer our questions."

What they're saying: Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who ran a primary campaign against Biden based around concerns over the 81-year-old president's electability, suggested he is sticking to his strategic post-debate silence about Biden's candidacy…

"An American is dead, a former President and others are wounded, and a shell-shocked country is left wondering how to restore reason and respect,"Phillips told Axios in a statement.

"It would be unpatriotic and unprincipledto direct energy to anything other than yesterday's national tragedy over the coming days. The only conversation about President Biden should be about how he can console our country, address the anger, and meet the moment."

What we're hearing: A second senior House Democrat told Axios that the Trump shooting has taken some of the heat off because it would "be bad form to make any statements against President Biden."

Another Biden-skeptical Democrat, asked about lingering questions around the president's candidacy, told Axios: "I don't think that's the focus right now."

Zoom in: Biden is adopting a similar posture, with his campaign pulling ads in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and the president condemning the shooting and calling Trump personally. (Bullshit, IMO They are pulling ads because there's the typical violent rhetoric and they want to erase it, too bad they can't erase everything else he has said)

Biden's visit to Austin, Texas, which was scheduled for Monday, will be postponed, the White House said.

What to watch: Most lawmakers who spoke to Axios said it is too early to say whether the cessation in tensions will last until the Democratic National Convention next month.

But the second senior House Democrat offered one reason for why it might:"We've all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency."

Judge dismisses Trump's federal classified docs case

Erin Doherty

Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday dismissed former President Trump's federal classified documents case, citing the "unlawful appointment and funding of special counsel Jack Smith."

Why it matters: Trump, the only former president convicted of a felony, has scored a major legal win ahead of Election Day as the other two outstanding criminal cases against him remain on ice.

Trump's legal team has repeatedly sought to have the classified documents case dismissed. It was widely believed to be the strongest criminal case the former president was facing.

Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, had come under intense scrutiny over her handling of the case. Critics have accused her of intentionally slow-walking the proceedings.

She had previously postponed the trial indefinitely, citing a number of outstanding pre-trial motions.

Driving the news: "The Superseding Indictment is DISMISSED because Special Counsel Smith's appointment violates the Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution," Cannon wrote in the Monday filing.

Trump's attorneys had argued that the case should be dismissed because they said Smith's appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional.

The special counsel's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cannon's ruling.

The big picture: Trump, who at one point was staring down four criminal cases,is now unlikely to face another trial before Election Day.

The Supreme Court earlier this month ruled that presidents have immunity for "official acts," all but ensuring that Trump's federal Jan. 6 case won't go to trial before November.

Cannon's dismissal of the classified documents case comes just days after an assassination attempt at Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

What they're saying: "As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, thisdismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account Monday.

(I didn't even think about the charges or trials, but the incident helped delay the vampires from sucking more blood)

yeah it's like the Axios and Darcy articles I post this a.m. saying MAGA will cause violence against them, while they deny ever causing violence against Trump and Trump Supporters. They can do it, because it's just"hard knuckled reporting"as Oliver Darcy says. (They should call themselves professional terrorists)

And journalists are the first ones to run into a fire…. they fucking believe they are saints, and the smearing and hatred of the media are not to destroy Trump, us and the country, it's just good reporting.
