Steven Woodrow represents Denver in the Colorado State House

He said Trump getting shot at meant people would have 'sympathy for the devil'

Woodrow released a statement Monday where he apologized

A Colorado lawmaker has been forced to apologize for a bizarre post that compared Donald Trump to Satan following the attempt on his life Saturday.

Steven Woodrow, who represents Denver in the Colorado State House of Representatives, made the post on social media shortly after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

'The last thing America needed was sympathy for the devil but here we are,' he wrote, in reference to Trump.

Immediately, he was swarmed with outrage and people pointing to other posts he'd made comparing Republicans and Trump supporters to Nazis.

Woodrow gave a statement Monday where he apologized, though he did not say he was sorry to any specific person or group.

A shooting range, a gun store, and a ladder purchase: Tracking the Trump rally gunman’s movements leading up to his attack

Story by John Miller, Casey Tolan and Evan Perez, CNN

4 min read

In the 48 hours before he opened fire on former President Donald Trump, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks made a series of stops in and around his suburban Pittsburgh hometown.

On Friday, he went to a shooting range where he was a member, and practiced firing, a law enforcement official told CNN. The next morning, Crooks went to a Home Depot, where he bought a five-foot ladder, and a gun store, where he purchased 50 rounds of ammunition, the official said.

Then, Crooks drove his Hyundai Sonata about an hour north, joining thousands of people from around the region who flocked to Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He parked the car outside the rally, with an improvised explosive device hidden in the trunk that was wired to a transmitter he carried, the official said. Then, investigators believe, he used his newly-bought ladder to scale a nearby building, and opened fire on the former president.

As investigators continue to search for a motive behind the attempted assassination, they are scrutinizing Crooks’ movements before the attack and trying to piece together a timeline of his actions leading up to it.

Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Even after successfully breaking into his phone and searching his computer, scouring his search history and bedroom, and interviewing his family and friends, agents still haven’t found evidence that would suggest political or ideological impetus for the shooting, law enforcement sources told CNN.

What Trump-Vance ticket means for Mitch McConnell's Ukraine aid crusade

Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance has complained of 'shockingly little accountability' with U.S. military aid to Ukraine

Former President Trump's choice of Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as his running mate in the November election could make Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's mission to shore up support for Ukraine in the Republican Party more difficult.

The Ohio senator has been a vocal critic of the various foreign aid packages, which included assistance for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia. "The problem in Ukraine … is that there’s no clear end point," he previously remarked, echoing a complaint of other Republicans about the status of the conflict.

Vance has further questioned the continued aid to Ukraine over a lack of oversight, even introducing legislation to better monitor it. "The United States has sent tens of billions worth of military aid to Ukraine with shockingly little accountability for where those resources have gone," he said in a statement at the time.

Fox News Poll: Approval of Congress lowest in five years

Majorities of voters dislike both the Democratic Party and the GOP

By Victoria Balara Fox News

Published July 15, 2024 6:00pm EDT

As the number of Congressional Democrats calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race grows, the latest Fox News national survey finds Congress’ approval rating at its lowest in five years.

The poll, released Monday, was conducted after the first presidential debate and before Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Just 18% of voters approve of the job Congress is doing, down one point from 19% in February 2024, and December and September 2023. Current congressional approval is down 16 points from 34% approval in June 2021, the highest during Biden’s presidency.

At that time, 47% of Democrats, 34% of independents, and 21% of Republicans approved of Congress. The new survey finds those numbers stand at 22%, 10%, and 16%, respectively.

A June Fox News survey found 36% of voters had a great deal or some confidence in Congress, placing it last among jury trials (70%), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (59%), the Department of Justice (54%), and the Supreme Court (50%).

Overall attitudes toward Congress have been in the spotlight as U.S. representatives and senators consider how to move forward following Biden’s dreadful debate performance on June 27. As of July 15, 18 Congressional Democrats and one Democratic senator have called upon Biden to step down as the party’s nominee.
