President al- Assad: We are in a transitional period related to viewpoints about the role of State and its institutions

President Bashar al-Assad said Monday that it is the duty of the People’s Assembly to be part of the transitional developmental stage that is linked to viewpoints about the role of the State and its institutions in general, policies and approaches, adding “all hopes would be put on the institution of the People’s Assembly, because it is the highest in any country.”

The President added in a press statement while casting his vote to the elections for members of the People’s Assembly “We are positive about any initiative to improve relations with Turkey, and this is the natural thing and no one is thinking to create problems with his neighbors, but this does not mean that we go to the meeting with Turkish President Erdogan without rules.”

“Within certain limits, the institution of People’s Assembly is governed by three systems, the first of which is the constitution, the Constitution is clear regarding the role of the People’s Assembly, second is the law which is also clear that it may need some amendments, like any law, there is no problem with this issue, but the problem does not lie in the law, from my point of view, the change and the problem is in the rule of procedures of the People’s Assembly because it is what determines the mechanisms which govern the role of this Assembly,” President al-Assad affrimed.

The President added that Personally, I speak as a Syrian citizen, the first thing I want from the People’s Assembly is to monitor policies.

“We cannot go smoothly during this stage and these difficult circumstances in Syria, the region and in the world if there was no national dialogue. The People’s Assembly is the most important institution for national dialogue, if you return to the rule of procedures… it would manage this process, process of dialogue, a dialogue within the Assembly,” President al-Assad elaborated.

The 2017–19 Saudi Arabian purge was the mass arrest of a number of prominent Saudi Arabian princes, government ministers, and business people in Saudi Arabia on 4 November 2017. It took place weeks after the creation of an anti-corruption committee led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Vance on Israel

On the Middle East, Vance has echoed Trump’s call for Israel to “finish the job” against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, saying that ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia can only be established once Hamas is defeated in the Gaza Strip. Saudi Arabia has said it can’t establish ties with Israel until it sees a viable pathway to the establishment of a Palestinian State.

“Our goal in the Middle East should be to allow the Israelis to get to some good place with the Saudi Arabians and other Gulf Arab states. There is no way that we can do that unless the Israelis finish the job with Hamas,” he said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” in May.

“If they can’t even do that, the attitude in the Middle East will be: ‘You can’t trust these guys, they’re not pursuing their own national security.’ So we’ve got to let them finish this job, and I think hopefully, on the other end of it, get to a new era in the Middle East.”

In a speech delivered at the Quincy Institute in May, Vance addressed the contradiction between his conditional support for Ukraine — “ I think we should stop supporting the Ukrainian conflict,” he said — and unconditional support for Israel.

“A majority of citizens of this country think that their savior, and I count myself a Christian, was born, died, and resurrected in that narrow little strip of territory off the Mediterranean,” he said.

“The idea that there is ever going to be an American foreign policy that doesn’t care a lot about that slice of the world is preposterous,” he said.

“We want the Israelis and the Sunnis to police their own region of the world. We want the Europeans to police their own region of the world, and we want to be able to focus more on East Asia.”
