I was never able to verify this story, but back in the day, gold bugs had a story about "Trader Zero."
Apparently, someone put large PUTs on UAL after the first plane hit, but the profits were never collected. The theory was that someone in one of the towers, first or second, doesn't matter, saw the plane hit and instead of exiting the building became a mad lad short seller on UAL. The image it conjures up is that of a guy so consumed by greed that as a raging inferno and death swirled all around him, all he could think about was the investment opportunity.
But he stayed at his trading desk too long and perished in the collapse and never got to cash out. The unknown man became known as "Trader Zero."
