Unlike others who guess and theorize and treat their imaginings as fact, I will clearly label this as my best guess, based on my past injuries and recouperation instructions.
I think Trump's bandage is there to cover whatever repair Trump's doctors (likely including one who specializes in plastics) did on the ear. There would be some swelling and discoloration that would not be all that pleasant to view. Otherwise, I think they would have the area open to the air to promote healing, with coverings only necessary when he is golfing or outside to protect from contaminates and accidental contact with the area.
Also, it appears the bandage does a good job of keeping Trump's hair out of the area. It would not be pleasant if the hair got stuck in the wound repair. Also, if he tends toward oily scalp, the natural oils would also be a potential contaminate.

The gunman who shot former President Donald Trump at an outdoor campaign rally last weekend wrote an anonymous message on the gaming platform Steam in the days leading up to the assassination attempt.
The shooting killed a firefighter who was attending the rally with his family and critically injured two other attendees.
The Steam message reportedly surfaced during the Secret Service briefing with lawmakers on Wednesday.
Matthew Thomas Crooks had posted that "July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds."
Officials said that Crooks also used the gaming platform Discord, but the company said it hasn't discovered any evidence that Crooks used it to "plan this incident, promote violence, or discuss his political views.”
