In the opera, and I've seen it live, they aren't sleeping because the icy princess doesn't want to marry. She refuses the ANONYMOUS prince, who has answered her 3 riddles. He offers her the opportunity to kill him if she discovers his identity by morn. Thus she orders the kingdom to dig all night, make maps and arrange and decode drops about him, even going so far as to make artwork with frogs to encourage each other…no, different story.
All of her people will be killed if they can't discover it.
So, besides movie usages and meanings, it's like the deepstate - cold, icy, refusing to love because of past events, even to the extent that all the people are sacrificed-
and the Whitehat team -the Prince - wanting to win the princess, but only in a fair way, using pure intelligence and personal anonymity to carry the day and restore the kingdom.
Side note - it just would be from the 17th most performed opera.
