France recalls contaminated Olympic-branded water bottles

France has recalled a line of Olympic-branded water bottles for children, a week before the Games' opening ceremony in Paris.

The reusable bottles contain excessive levels of a chemical, Bisphenol A, says the official consumer recall agency, Rappel Conso.

The white flasks stamped with the Olympic rings and the Paris 2024 mascot, or the flame, were issued in August last year and sold until June.

The authorities have urged people to return the bottles to the stores they bought them from.

Bisphenol A - which has been widely used in making food containers - has been the subject of ongoing assessments about its safety to consumers.

According to France's food safety agency Anses, it is an endocrine disruptor - meaning it interferes with the body's hormones - and is believed to be linked to health issues including breast cancer and infertility.

Associated with a wide array of health issues, Bisphenol A has been banned in France since 2015.

Rappel Conso's website says the bottles made by the Vilac company have "levels of Bisphenol A not in line with regulations" on products designed for contact with foods.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, an international multi-sport event is scheduled to be held in France from 26 July to 11 August 2024.

Investment firm says massive short of Truth Social stock before Trump shooting was โ€˜filed in errorโ€™

A massive stock trade just before the Trump shooting that sparked frenzied conspiracy theories has now been explained by the firm involved.

A Texas-based wealth management firm has apologised for a clerical error that gave the appearance it took a massive short position on shares in Donald Trumpโ€™s social media company just before Saturdayโ€™s assassination attempt.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing by Austin Private Wealth dated July 12 showed the firm had shorted 12 million shares in Trump Media & Technology Group Corp (DJT) via a put option, sparking frenzied conspiracy theories after the unusual trade was highlighted by a number of social media users.

Global computer outage snarls Arizonaโ€™s early voting, raises alarm about November

A global Microsoft-based computer outage early Friday crippled the electronic systems Arizonaโ€™s two largest counties use for early in-person voting, causing election officials to quickly divert to backup plans to keep early voting open for the stateโ€™s primary election.

The breakdown affected the devices thatMaricopaand Pima counties use at voting locations to check voters in, verify voter eligibility and print ballots. It did not affect the machines the counties use to count ballots, which are not used during early voting because voters place their completed ballots into envelopes to be counted later.

The outage hit in the middle of the night, and when polls opened, the counties had chosen different plans on what to do about it: Maricopa only opened four of its planned 41 locations at 9 a.m.โ€” the locations where it was able to immediately get new equipment. Pima decided to open all six sites it had planned to on time at 8 a.m. but switched to using provisional ballots. Itโ€™s unclear if any other Arizona counties faced outages that affected early voting, although many others said they did not.

The outage comes as the state is more than halfway into its early voting period for the July 30 primary election, on a light day of early voting โ€” only 200 people were expected to show up to vote in-person countywide in Maricopa County on Friday, for example.

The crashes highlight a type of vulnerability in local election systems across the country โ€” the vast majority of which operate on Microsoft Windows. That raises urgent new questions about how to prevent such meltdowns from happening during nationwide elections, especially the November presidential election, and how officials would respond in the heat of election day voting.

Thatโ€™s especially true in counties, such as Maricopa and Pima, that rely entirely on electronic systems to check in voters, make sure they are eligible to vote, and print their ballots, and that no longer keep on hand printed voter rolls or pre-printed ballots. Both counties use a โ€œvote centerโ€ model where voters can vote anywhere, which requires the use of this technology.

โ€œI would like you to do us a favor, though, because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it. I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine. They say CrowdStrike โ€ฆ I guess you have one of your wealthy people โ€ฆ the server, they say Ukraine has it,โ€ Trump said on the call, according to the transcript.

Trump goes on to say he would like to have Barr "call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it." He added, "Whatever you can do, it's very important that you do it if that's possible."

Though it wasn't exactly clear what Trump was referring to, CrowdStrike is the name of the cybersecurity firm that was hired to investigate the hack of the Democratic National Committee in 2016. DOJ officials were not able to shed any light on the matter.

CrowdStrike, in a statement, said that it had already "provided all forensic evidence and analysis" to the FBI regarding its DNC hack investigation.
