Dems in terrible bind on Kavanaugh nomination

Leadership is faced with the challenge of catering to two factions in the party. On one side, red-state Democrats who are worried that opposing Kavanaugh could imperil their reelection chances in November, and with it the party’s hope of winning the majority in the Senate.

On the other, a progressive base that is demanding Democrats engage in a full-on attack since they see President Trump’s pick as a serious threat to liberal values.

The balancing act will soon play out when Democrats decide what strategy and tactics to employ.

DOJ reopens Emmett Till case after ‘new information’ arises

Federal investigators have reopened a decades-old investigation into the slaying of Emmett Till, a black teenager who was killed in Mississippi.

The Justice Department announced in a March report to Congress that it has reopened Till’s 1955 killing after receiving “new information,” The Associated Press reported Thursday.

The case was closed in 2007 after authorities said the suspects had died and the state grand jury didn’t file any charges.

An explosive new book by Timothy B. Tyson called “The Blood of Emmett Till" came out last year and alleges that Carolyn Donham, the white woman at the center of the case, admitted to lying about the events leading up to the murder.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to keep the chamber open for much of August and possibly push through more Trump administration nominees will give him rare bragging rights to managing the longest working schedule in nearly 50 years.

Often mocked as a part time legislative body, the Senate is on schedule to work the most days since 1971, according to a new report.

Overall, should the trend continue, the two-year Senate session could total 385 days, 68 higher than the modern day average of 317, according to the Pew Research Center.

White House study finds many safety-net beneficiaries could work but don’t

The analysis finds that majorities of Medicaid, food stamp, and housing beneficiaries are all working-age, nondisabled adults. Within those categories, majorities work fewer than 20 hours a week.

“Now is the ideal time to expand carefully designed work requirements to non-cash welfare programs,” the unsigned document concludes, suggesting that Congress should act. President Trump has also directed agencies to pursue work requirements administratively where possible.

The report justifies work requirements as needed to decrease government dependency, while crediting the safety net with helping achieve “a dramatic reduction in poverty.”

Nearly one in five nondisabled, working-age adults now receives what the administration calls “welfare” in the form of Medicaid, food stamps, or housing assistance, in addition to cash welfare, the study found.

Republicans around the country have pushed for tighter work requirements for benefits. For example, Maine required childless, able-bodied adults to work in order to get food stamps and saw the vast majority of beneficiaries stop seeking benefits.

Security wall erected around residence where Trump will stay in London

Workers have erected barricades around the Winfield House in London, where President Trump is scheduled to spend Thursday night.

CNN reported that temporary fencing and concrete blocks surround the perimeter of the building, which serves as the residence of the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.

A sign outside the building reportedly warns passersby that surveillance, armed patrols and dog patrols are in the area.

It's unclear if the barriers are a result of significant protests that are planned during Trump's stay in the United Kingdom.

Air Force One touched down in London after Trump departed the NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday afternoon local time. He'll remain in the United Kingdom until Sunday.
