WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter, who at 98 was the longest living president in American history, has passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia. The former president recently enrolled in home hospice care, and close relatives had been by his side during his final days.
Former President Jimmy Carter was a humanitarian and a champion of human rights, and his long post-White House life allowed him to rebuild his legacy from an unpopular president to a revered figure. Carter was known for his tireless work with Habitat for Humanity, and he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote peace and democracy around the world.
Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946, and served in the Navy until 1953. He then returned to Plains and began a career in politics, serving in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967, and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.
