When I was a kid we were going to get a male Black Labrador Retriever puppy from a guy that my dad worked with.
We were going to call him Sampson because Black Labs grow to become pretty large.
But when we got him, he was so tiny and so cute, that we just started to call him Sambo instead. Little Black Sambo. We never thought of it as being derogatory toward Black people.
